P-BOPs in Canada

The P-BOP cars have arrived at the PO in Blaine Washington, and a club-mate will be going down to pick them up for me. I have written him a brief summary of what proxy racing is all about and especially the fact that the cars will be returned to their owners in the US. This usually satisfies the Customs agent at the border.

At least three races are planned, Luf's Targa, Perry's Rocket and Mike's Bullring. I might even give them a whirl on my Minidrome. I will give them a qualifying run on the Targa and use the same order for all remaining events.

When these races are done, they will all come home.

By the comments posted by the hosts and the participants, I think this proxy was a hit. I am already planning a P-BOP 2 with a few different twists.

It feels like Christmas around here, as I open the big box of P-BOP cars and other goodies. I am planning to give them a test run and qualifying on Monday night before racing, and then probably the Targa on Friday.

Qualifying is in the Book

After my plan for Monday got cancelled, I went to Luf's early tonight and ran the qualifying before our usual race night. I just picked them out of the box in random order, ran them at least ten laps each, or until I could not improve the time. I ran them all on 10 volts with the same settings on my Slot.it controller.

First up, Strangebrew's #84. This car had lots of power, but it seemed had too much traction, at least laterally, as I had to be very careful to slow way down on the turns, or it picked up its inside wheels and deslotted.

Slot Therapist's #7. This was a nice car to drive and had no particular problems.

#3 Shotgun Dave's lady passenger had decided to get out of the truck and go for a stroll, but I Gooped her to the seat and she stayed for the ride. The car ran very smoothly and had no problems.

Luf's numberless Willys was a bit twitchy and had to be driven with care or it would lift an inside wheel and deslot.

Strangebrew's #45 was like his other, but a bit faster. Those black marshmallow rear tires provide so much traction that it tips out of the slot if not taken slowly into the sharpest turns.

Retro Racer's #45. Who's car is this and what did you guys do to my old slow black coupe. I don't remember it being this fast, but it was always smooth.

BTaylor's #88 is a nice smooth running car with only one problem. It is underpowered compared to the rest of the field. Although the Targa does not have any really long straights, it seemed to labour for top end on the ones that were there. It also seemed to die rather than roll when the power was let off.

Retro Racer's #44. This car is tippier than my other, but is actually faster on the straight. it performed well with no problems.

Tusco Todd's #55 also seemed to want to tip and deslot in the tight turns. Luf's track has a couple of sharp almost hairpin turns and a "parabolica" which can be hard to take at a good speed with a car prone to be tippy.

Now for the results in order of best lap time.

1st - #44 - 8.40 seconds
2nd - #45 (RR) - 8.58
3rd - #3 - 8.68
4th - #7 - 9.13
5th - Willys - 9.43
6th - #55 - 9.96
7th - #45 (SB) - 10.14
8th - #84 - 10.36
9th - #88 - 10.52

Mike had his Bullring set up tonight and it is going to be fun. It was pretty hard to tell who won, but we will have the timer and counter working when we finish on that track. But first we have the Targa and the Rocket to run. I hope to be done by the end of the month and then will be getting your cars and goodies home to you.

Ol' 88 is about shot. when it gets home, I am going to crank the voltage, and let the smoke out of that old Artin motor. :lol: after an easy 10,000 laps, it probably is on its last leg.
Been a tough one though!

We are good to go for this afternoon for P-BOPs on the Targa. Despite the fact that these cars will look totally out of place in Sicily, we should have a great wheel banging time. We will be racing three cars at a time with marshalling. We will not be streaming it, but Luf will be taking some video so you can see your cars in action.

Perry's Rocket is planned for Monday afternoon, and then a couple weeks until Mike gets back home and we finish up on the Bullring.

P-BOPs are done with the Targa

Before racing tonight we did the proxy run on Luf's famous Targa track. Our little band of hot rods looked a bit out of place but they did us proud, none the less.

Although a couple of cars struggled a bit with the sharp turns, and we had to run one car in the middle because it's guide kept getting stuck in the tightest turn of the inside lane, otherwise all went well.

One of the guys didn't make it, and so we ran two lanes at a time instead of three as planned. The laps were timed with Trackmate systems and all cars were run at ten volts. The two of us who marshalled were quick on the draw when needed, and no track calls were necessary. Since we ran lanes 1 and 3, collisions were minimal, even where the track squeezes in the village.
