I just use a bench vice with a small metal block with a 2.5mm hole drilled in the block to allow the motor shaft to go through. Blue tack or use whatever you want to hold the block in place in the vice. Seems to work and Ive yet to have a failure.

Vote number 3 for the Slot.it deal. Since I've gotten it, I actually enjoy changing pinions. It's not that the tool merely did its job and made the task more simple to complete, but I tend to go hunting for motors that need pinion swaps and look forward to trying out gear ratios. So in short, the Slot.it puller/presser has made me insane.

For installs - I REALLY like the used HUDY unit I picked up! Does a great job!

That's the one I use. The spring loaded pin makes it the best for me.

Slot.it one can handle long shaft motors for front mounted motors. And SUPPOSEDLY be done in situ, but I've not needed to try since getting it.

Not sure, but Slot.it comes very close.

Not everyone can afford tools like this just getting started. So some improvise and either make their own or choose lower cost alternatives. There is no "perfect solution".
It's like telling someone what the best recliner is. In the end you choose the one that you are comfortable with.

Of course, it's only AFTER you make the mistake of soldering a motor in place before putting the pinion on that you decide to make the investment. :)
