screwdrivers and pozi drivers

I am curious. For slot car screws do you prefer a #0 or #00 Phillips screwdriver, or do you use a #0 or #00 pozi driver? I am referring to the body mounting screws.

Thanks for the response, RM. Last night I started thinking more about this. This morning I got out an old, but still usable set of micro screwdrivers. Using reading glasses (yeah, I'm old) I looked carefully at how the drivers fit into the screws on various cars. I tested a Fly Classic Chevron, Slot.it Ford GT, and a Spirit BMW 2002. I was quite surprised to see the PH #1 fit the best in all three models! In fact I was going to post this morning about my findings and ask if there was a standard consistency in the sizing of a Phillips head screwdriver. But your post and excellent photo confirms what I saw. I too have been using a #00 for a long time. I will definitely get a #1 screwdriver.

I too use a #1 and #0 phillips head, and agree that the #00 is too small to be useful in basically every slot car application that I've tried to use them. I also ignore pozidrive screws and treat them as though they were standard phillips. I'm not going to go out and buy a special screwdriver when I already have one that does the job.

The only suggestion that I have is to make sure that your #1 driver has the narrow shaft like is pictured in RM's post. I have a couple that are fatter before the tip, which pretty much means that they can't fit in to grab recessed screws.

On a side-note, check your pants pockets after working on slot cars. I ended up wrecking my #00 driver after it went through the washer and dryer. It's nice and L-shaped now!

I use that same SCC driver, works well enough.

With some phillips type screws the slots are not deep enough, so with many phillips drivers you will end up stripping the screws. The cure for that problem is to grind a little bit off of the tip of the driver.
