Wal-Mart can carry items we use a lot. In the craft/sewing department they have various cutting mats. These are great for scratch building and I use mine all the time.

You can sure see what you are doing :)

The brush set is also great to have. Use them for applying Future for clear coats, various cleaning tasks, scenery work...etc.

10$ for thematt and 5 for the brush set. Not bad to have on the bench for little $$$.

My wife is a big time quilter, has had her quilts shown all over the world, including three years running at the biggest show in the world in Houston (yeah, I'm kinda proud of her). I get leftovers and discards from her like you wouldn't believe, including those great cutting mats. I also get cutters, rulers, little clips, all kinds of stuff.

I have a similar mat from my wife's quilting days as well. Awesome tool. I also get the bag of the cheap brushes for the exact same things.

Those quilting type mats are soooooooooooo expensive here. But, the standard green ones are cheap as chips now. Odd isn't it. I picked up an A3 sized one which is the right size for the sliding section on my work bench for AUD 5.99 and AUD 12.99 for one that will go on the main part of the bench if I ever manage to tidy the bench up enough to actually see the surface. The self healing mats are the best thing since sliced bread.
