looking for a rewinding jig

Postby chappy » Sat Mar 21, 2015 11:15 am

At the risk of being like a granny with her knitting needles.
I am looking for an armature rewinding tool.
I have the wire required, and the armatures, and the intent to rewind , just for a bit of
self satisfaction really. To be done while spending the obligatory time in front of the TV.
I remember there used to be a jig that made the process a bit simpler, but havent been able, to find one.
I suspect that with the cost of new motors being affordable , rewinding is not as popular anymore.
So in my hunt for Hens Teeth I thought I would ask here .
Sort of like asking directions, and being told " you can't get there from here " lol.
Any info or leads appreciated.
Thanks.

Bob, keep an eye open on eBay. Since the first of the year, there have been 2 or 3 LaGanke rewind jigs for sale there. If you want to buy new, Rick Bennardo of RGEO Products in Pittsburgh, PA has made some winders in the past, His email address is: scrgeo@comcast.net If you're in the building mood, an Australian slot board called The Slotcar Outhouse (http://www.slotcarouthouse.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=49) has a rewind article that shows a rewind jig cobbled together from brass tubing & rods. Maybe you could build something similar.

Actually dosent look to difficult to build . Thanks for that.
I'll have a look and see wuat I've got , and what I need to build one.

I sold my home made one earlier this year.
It was pretty easy to make, I wound several arms with it 20 years ago (and yes, they did actually run). Mine used a 2x2 screwed to a plywood base. I drilled a hole for the shaft and soldered together a handle like in the slotcarouthouse article. I used a piece of flat brass with a hole and a groove to hold a couple of small screw eyes, one fixed and one adjustable position so I could wind different stack lengths with the same jig.
It's a very rewarding experience to run a motor that you have wound yourself. Go ahead and build one......it's not that hard and for me it was a great way to learn about motor construction and tuning.

Thanks Chappyman, its great to see different ideas on the jig.
And like you, I just want to do it for my own satisfaction, and a bit of a learning curve.
I have some 4x4 scx motors that need to be rewound for some old rally cars, and I have a bunch of old Johnsons for my vintage cars that I would like to, try and keep original.
Thanks again

I have only bothered to rewind a motor once in my modern era of slots(2002-2015) It came about because a Slotit yellow bell motor went up in smoke and I had some 31 gauge wire lying around.
Back in the day I rewound more than a few which were all done by hand ie holding the arm in my hand while winding with the other.
I did have a jig that was really only a small step forward in helping with the process.

One of the weak points of the RTR motors is the com. I used a shortened Mabuchi FT16 item that I robbed from a wreck. I glued it in place with zero timing. From memory I was able to pack 65 turns onto the arm . I was initially concerned that the tiny brushes wouldnt work but they seemed to bed in quite quickly.

The motor is still is operation a couple of years later but I have to say it is amp hungry...quadrupling what the Yellow can motor originally consumed.

Looks like a nice job John.
I did build a wobbler that turns around and actually wobbles when unwinding the old wire and counting the turns.
Its all just for a bit of fun really, and something to, do while sitting in my armchair.
Your right about the comms though, especially on the SCX I find.
First the ring goes then the comm . Too bad really as they are a decent little motor in the 4x4s.
Cheers

Hey Bob, if the motor is cooked then you have nothing to loose....except the number of turns you put on that pole.

John my thoughts exactly, at the cost of the 4x4 replacement motors from SCX, I can use a lot of wire lol.

I had an old rewinder jig from many years ago, and if I haven't sold it you can buy it. I'll have to go search in the dusty "mysterious parts" box, if I can find the box!

I can't remember where I saw this idea......pretty sure it was in my old 60s magazines but they are in storage right now......

Anyway, here is a crude diagram (not to scale):
Image

The left side shows a side view. It was a 2x2 post on a small (4x4?) plywood base. I drilled an 1/8" hole, bent some music wire axle stock, and had my crank. I am sure you could put a brass sleeve through there if desired.

The right side shows a front view of the plate on the end of the crank that actually held the armature. The top slot (thank you Dremel) and bottom hole are lined up with each other. They both have small (8/32?) screw eyes in them, held in place with two nuts (I used my Cox wrenches to tighten them). I think they came from a picture hanging kit, but I maybe the hardware store. The top one, when loose, can slide up and down to loosen or tighten the arm in the jig.

To use it, loosen the top screw eye, put one end of the arm through the bottom screw eye, then lower the top one down and tighten the nut to hold the arm firm. Wrap your wire and start cranking, spin the arm in the jig when it's time to move to the next pole.

Cheap and easy and functional.

That's basically it, all right. Luckily, with your explanation and the instructions included, Bob should be all set with the La Ganke set (1965), I'm sending him.
