Tool Holders

I hate using cans to hold tools (NOT). If you have a metal workbench or metal shelves for tools, glue some magnets to the inside bottom of a can. The can won't fall over. Why glue them in place? Sometimes they stick better to the tool. Notice in the picture the punches stand straight up.

I have been thinking about using magnets to "rack" my tool bits for the lathe. There are a few of them I use all the time, but the rest just lay there in the cardboard they came in. I need to treat the tools with more respect.

Either one big one or several little ones. This is a can from sliced mushrooms. The best magnet is one from a dead hard drive. Very powerful. Of course you have to tear the dead HD apart. I do this to destroy the data completely. My wife's travel agency has me do it because their HDs have credit card numbers on.

I just bought a set of tool holders for my mill bnmt-30 250.00 bucks for 7

We use a lot of 3\4 7 layer plywood at work for steel rule dies, and I grab up hunks that are off fall 6X14 or so
stack up 3 layers and drill out spots for holding stuff, you do not want some tools to hit others, like don't let 2 files rub each other, and never touch the cutting edge of a tool, mills, reamers and other cutting tools will dull if the acids in your skin contact them.

I like the magnetic can idea Dan, I could see a cookie can lid with magnets to hold small parts during a build

My end mills are in separate plastic containers in drawers. The files here are cheap HF tools.

You can glue or tape magnets to plastic/paper lids/boxes and they do the same job.

Strange that "cookie can" didn't register in my head as "cookie tins"-- Mr Beam (I call him Jim- we're pals), hadn't even come off the shelf yet.
