What is your favorite Pinion Puller/Press?

There are pinions you can slip on and solder. These help prevent the distortion caused by expansion with some pinions.

The reason they are harder to come by? People don't want to solder. That has been argued over the years, but the proof is at your dealer. If demand for such gears were there, they would have them.

Sloting plus does make pinions with a set screw. Can you use them in all applications? No. The additional space the sleeve takes limits it in some cases.

If you use the right tool properly the chances of motor damage are VERY slim. I cannot even remember if, or when any of the people I race with has ever ruined a motor due to pinion removal or installation. It happens, but very rarely.

hey Harry,
who makes solder-on pinions for the odd pitches for these home set cars? did you have anything particular in mind?
i don't mind tinning a shaft to get a decent runout (assuming that i can avoid melting plastic motor parts in the process! :lol:)
obviously i'm familiar with the commercial track 48, 60 & 80p types, but haven't tried meshing 'em up with these slot.it, etc. spurs and crowns, which have dramatically different tooth profiles across the band.
also, my caliper says that the shafts on a stock scaley can are a couple thou larger in diameter than 2.0mm.

The only solder on pinions I know of are Sonic steel pinions used for drag racing. There may be others out there, but I'm not familiar with them. That's why I have the 2mm reamer. ;) 2mm reamers can be ordered from McMaster-Carr if you can't obtain them locally. :)

Until Slot.it or someone else comes out with a puller for the pinions for a 1.5mm shaft, here's one I use. It's made for R/C helicopter gears, and is called the GWS Gear Puller Tool Micro (pins for 1.0, 1.5, and 2mm shafts).



Anyway, I have the MB Slot Press and Puller, and a Hudy puller, for 2mm shafts. Probably going to get the latest version of the Slot.it soon...
