My 1st attempt at routing a track....

Postby bobbyraz49 » Fri Apr 25, 2014 7:18 pm

Well...here is where I am today !!! 2 lane routed track...11' x 5'4". I used the plastics from LUF and the router bits from SCC. All worked great!
Sanding this weekend and hopefully applying the copper tape next week.
Awaiting many part to fuel this project from the fine guys at SCC.
PLEASE insert comment/ideas !!
Thanks to all those great people who helped me get to this point !

After trying ...I can't load the picture using Photobucket, so here is the link.....

P.S. ...mine is the unfinished picture in Photobucket app. I can only dream of getting results like the other wood track posted there.

Plus.....it appears I am on my way up on HRW. 1/43rd janitor !!!

On the left side there it looks like a pretty tight kink there??? Do the guides clear that ok?

But great job on your first attempt sir, I knew you could tackle it. :text-bravo:

Bobby,

Looking great! See what you can do when you put your mind to it?

I'm impressed. Hey we all learn by doing. Keep up the super work.

Nice work Bobby.
Its amazing what you can do when you finally get at it.
The kink area the other lads are talking about may cause stress to, the guide assembly , even if the guide fits through ok. It depends on how fast that part of the circuit is combined with the sudden change in direction.
Otherwise I think, its a great design with nice flow.
Congrats
Bob

Great, so what's next?
?Scenery.
?paint job on the board's surface.

The back straight could be a length of tarmac surfaced road, with the cars coming off to do exciting things (loops) in roadside scrub, desert, mud or whatever.

To prevent against anything getting caught in the slots of my oval, especially in a place it would be hard to get at, I routed the slots all the way through the 1/4" surface after gluing it to a ladder type frame made from 1 x 3 inch premium pine strips. It's worked great with no warping at all.

For the road track I plan to build this summer I'm going to use 1/2" MDF for the surface with 1/4" deep slots. But, I plan to do occasional cut outs on the bottom of sections so the slots have bottomless areas where debris can fall through and not build up in the slots.

Best memory of racing with bottomless slots? While racing with my grandson a spider crawled up on to the track through one of the slots. Needless to say it was a real bad day for him from that moment on. I guess the flagger didn't see the obstruction on the track in time to throw the caution flag.

Great job Bobby, very nice! I would echo the comments about the kink. Scalex guides may fit fine, other cars and guides could eventually have issues because of larger guides. It's a pretty abrupt transition and will kick the cars around a bit. If you want it smooth, a little bondo and a re-route is easy now (I did that twice on my track). If you want the challenge of "driving" that point of the track, then leave it as-is. The best tracks are running tracks, no matter if they have kinks or not.

Looking forward to seeing it running! Good job!

After reading the comments regarding the "kink", I am considering routing that area again. How long does it take Bondo to cure ?

Thanks for the positive feedback and the suggestions !!!!

Also...can someone link the specific Bondo product that I should use on MDF ? TY !

Home Depot has a few choices and I am uncertain on which to use.

This is what I have used for years...Even the cabinet shops use it when doing plastic laminate work, sticks to MDF and Partical board and anything else....The speed it dries is really fast when it is warm....
