The Racin' Raisin aka: Carrera Ferrari 250 SWB

I love the look of the Ferrari 250 SWB. Even though it's not the fastest car in our digital bunch, it looks amazing on the track. When I had a chance to pick up a couple more of these fellas, I knew that one was going to undergo my dream livery. My favorite Ferrari color is Vinaccia, a deep brownish red. Vinaccia is Italian for "the remains after crushing grapes for wine," and if ever a color was captured its name, this is it!

Being a Ferrari paint, Vinaccia is expensive. So I did the next best thing. My wife, who is a florist and has an amazing eye for matching colors, volunteered to head to the local hobby shop with me to find some paint that could mix and get as close as possible. She grabbed two Tamiya cans, TS-11 Maroon and TS-62 NATO Brown. Since Tamiya dries the instant you spray it, I decided to spray both cans on the body simultaneously. To my amazement, it worked. The color is closer than I ever thought I'd get to Vinaccia.

The livery is pure fantasy. I meshed together a bunch of different SWBs that I saw online to come up with this. The chrome on the hood intake was a happy accident. I sanded too much at that point and had to cover it with something, and luckily there were some SWBs that had a little chrome bar right across that spot. I continued the theme by chroming the wheel vents too. All five vents, the headlight rings, and all chrome around the windows is baremetal foil. Another amazing aspect of this build was that the baremetal foil actually matches well with the existing Carrera chrome painted parts.

So here it is, sans clearcoat which will come later on. The silver car in these shots is what the Racin' Raisin used to be before entering my bodyshop.

And one last note, not only did my wife help find the correct color combination, but she also coined the name Racin' Raisin. She's great. If I could dedicate a car build to her, this would be the one.

Nice job. Really looks the part.

I must admit to liking the SWB version. While she's not as sleek as the original, the proportions just look better to me. It's not as inclined to look slightly drooped.

I found a color similar to that in the big spray cans at Wal-Mart. It's called Claret Wine.I'm not sure if it's Krylon,Rustoleum, or what ever else they have back there.
