G'day Guys,

Well team Bilby has had a busy day in the slot cave cave.....

....My wife has been messing around with the painting gear to see how it all works (evidently well!), I've slinked off to do some work on some other drag car projects that need attending to.

Anyway, here is the Nomad Raceway Show 'n Go class car I've been putting together this week.




It's a 70 Monte Carlo (AMT Fast and the Furious II model kit) with a Competition Resins CRC-102 Mini Rectangle hood scoop.




Yep, front wheels aren't to scale, hey, I'll leave that concern in the realm of 1/32 plastics, throw away my butt plug and enjoy something a little different!




The Captain laying down the undercoat. Paasche single airbrush, a compressor like H's, neato little spray booth, all worked a treat today, the model is coming along nicely.




Undercoat on..... The color coat will be Tamiya Gold, we are using Tamiya paints on for the moment. Main reason is the hobby shop is 5 minutes walk from where we live, I can stagger down there and pick something out when I get an idea....

Rob nice start on the Monte Carlo, What thinning ratio are you using with the Tamiya paint and primer for the airbrush? Terry

Thanks,not sure of the ratio, its out of a rattle pack and then put through the airbrush. We read somewhere it gives a very smooth finish, seems to be true, will put some photos up of the color coat today.

It does give a smooth finish that way, but works out kinda pricey.

Looking forward to seeing some colour.

She was on-line shopping for finishing products last night, found some good stuff at The Sandpaper Man in Australia. She got some micro mesh polishing stuff, apparently its good gear.....

Todd, I love these Monte Carlos they are an awesome car :)

I like to see couples playing together. Shame there's not more of it.

....The Captain enjoys painting for some weirdy reason!

She had never airbrushed anything in her life until yesterday morning, we went out, set up the gear, she messed around getting a feel for it on some plastic spoons, then away she went......

The internet is a brilliant thing, she read Daves tutorial, got some good tips off that, watched Dr.Cranky videos on You Tube, plus had a surf around looking at other stuff (over the last week or so).

Early days yet, she is investigating the intricacies of Bare Metal Foil as well, its her first model car so everything is a bit of a sharp learning curve....

I must admit to not minding, I was never that good at painting (pretty bloody ordinary actually), I also have the lower pair of fingers on each hand numb at the moment from nerve damage, so find the fine motor skill stuff a little difficult.

Gives me a chance to work out gearing for the different classes of cars we are racing at the Drags and make the necessary changes.

We are having fun, slot cars are great and I find the Drag racing side of the hobby to be very interesting, a great tonic to re-fire my interest in the hobby, plus I get to spend time with a great group of people at Nomad Raceway!

Gee Rob, That car is already looking tough. I'm a bit excited about seeing how this turns out. It's great that the Mrs Bilby (would that be a Bilbyette) is getting into it too.
Seems that she has been very patient and read as much as she can, practiced and then painted. The plastic spoons are a great idea, have a bit of a run on concave and converse curves as well as flat surfaces.
That's what I like about this hobby, lot's of different avenues to try.

I think the Monte Carlo is a pretty cool sort of car and a bit of a sleeper too (in real life :) ).

Work is still progressing, Mrs Bilby is having smoko before the last color coat goes on, she seems pretty happy with how its going....

.....I've been shimming out the rear axle on that '57 of ours, then I'm going to take the dremel to the axle to get rid of the excess axle length.

I'm also looking into another project, I need a modern style Funny car or Rail for one of our classes. Im not big into rails (building a chassis for one is also a little daunting for me at present), so I've decided to go for a Funny Car. Pete and the boys at Nomad reckon I should put a Funny car on the black Hemi Thunder Super Stocker but i really like that one the way it is.....

....So I've decided to build a Funny Car from scratch, got most of the gear here already for it, I'll use a Revell Dodge Avenger kit for the body (Go Mopar!), have also got a US spring steel chassis kit and a JK Hawk 7 floating around. Will be fun, the benchmark is my Dart which is the quickest non-rail car at the club, Pete Richards pair of rails are a bit of a reach away though, but its good to set a high goal for a project I think :)

Its great fun Ted AND there is a rather nice Drag racing club in Perth from what I'm led to believe :)

The color coat is on.....











It is VERY Gold! I've got to put my hand up for a few preparation errors, a couple of gaps between scoop and hood, plus the pre-paint prep in general was a bit ordinary.

I cannot believe the quality of the modern painting gear, amazing control and finish, in the bad old days you would have a little extra paint slosh into the gaps and fill them up, well at least thats how it was for me :)

I'll take a little more care preparing the body next time, get it right, paint doesn't hide the blemishes, thats for sure!

The paint is very good, better than I would be capable of :)

I should've filled in those joins at the bottom of the scoop, but there you go..... The other spot with is on the rear roof pillar, where the molded Monte Carlo emblems were. I figured they would be a little tricky for newbies to Bare Metal Foil, so I sanded them back. Missed a bit of the molding at the bottom, left a bump, you can spot it at certain angles.

Not going to re-do it, was a good learning experience for both of us, next step is Bare Metal foil, decals, then clear coat.

Will be learning again, we will just go steady and see what it turns out like :)

The Captain wont be doing any more on it for a few days, but hopefully it should be finished in another couple of weeks. Stay tuned :)
