I was considering ordering custom decals, which would be simple letter/number script. Then I thought of the possibility of just hand lettering on decal paper with something like a paint pen. Has anyone tried this?

May just work, but I would guess you need to keep the paint very thin to keep from cracking when you try to slide them around. But to thin may be to transparent for darker surfaces. All you can do is give it a shot...

Try using Krylon Short Cuts paint pens. They don't cost much, and the paint is fairly flexible for days after you apply it.

If you want a hand lettered look - why not do them on paper and scan them into a computer and then print.

It would work. You would need to apply a sealer coat of clear over the top just as you would for printed decals.

Just about any Epson or Canon inkjet printer would be up to the task. Other brands two, but I prefer Epson or Canon for ink quality.
But you're not going to get an inkjet printer that will print opaque white. That would require a sublimation printer which is where the big dollars come in. Or an Alps printer, which is particularly outdated and outmoded technology.

Various bits of script and small numbers on my zipper proxy car. If slotcars4u.net wasn't swamped I'd just be ordering these from him, no problem. I'm sending out some e-mails to other decal makers.

Unfortunately inkjet inks are transparent... Translucent at most.
I have access to a few people who have Alps printers and could print white decals and opaque decals for you if you are able to provide the artwork. The problem might be lead time though.
Are you on Facebook at all? Or any of the other slot car fora? The best man for you to talk to would be Alan Stubbings, aka Stubbo.
