Alclad II Prismatic paints

Just wondering if anyone has used them. They are listed as either Prismatic or Holomatic and require a black gloss base prior to the colour shot. Wondering how difficult they are to use? How durable the surface? How they hold up to clear coating? That sort of thing.

HI don't know about their Prismatic paint but I use to use their chrome paint for bumper's and trim when I use to build static model cars and that paint gave the best look of chrome and looked even better once clear coat was applied.

So I guess that their prismatic paint line would be just as good if not better JMHO.
If you don't mind where are you purchasing your Alclad II from I lost their web addy and seem unable to find it.

Thank you Ember I can now break out the ol badger brush and get painting and I ordered the bright aluminum to try an experiment to see if their prismatic paint is any thing like their chrome that I'll swear by their chrome and the work that I've seen you do.

The Alclad II will look great have you used lacquer paints before if you have you might need a barrier coat like when you use what I call a hotter paint like a automotive paint that will melt the plastic some or totally destroy what ever you are working on, but I have had good results with just basic prep then spray with their chrome so I don't see anything going wrong with their paints at all.

Am I correct in assuming that "Prismatic" refers to these strange paints that change color depending on the viewer's angle of sight?

Yup. They're the ones, the 'Colour Change" paints that are so expensive but so sexy on the right vehicle.

I've only ever used acrylics through my airbrush, and very little of that. But I bought some of the prismatics ages ago when I was lucky enough to see them sitting in a hobby shop in Melbourne. I'm probably still lacking airbrush experience too much to consider tackling the task. Its just that I was looking at the shape of a Ninco 356 sitting in the stripping bath and thinking I'd like to do something a little different and 'in your face' with it in comparison to my usual fare, whilst still keeping things tasteful of course.

I have used automotive aerosols, but again they've been acrylics.

If you're doing OK with acrylicss you should do fine with lacquers. The pigment grind is generally finer, which means the paint will be more forgiving through the airbrush. Tip dry will be less of a problem as well. Two things to remember with any Alclad paint:

Your black base needs to be smooth as a baby's bottom, because imperfections will show through the Alclad

You should be spraying the Alclad at lower pressure, 8-10 PSI. I'd suggest a gravity feed airbrush as well, Their control is better than siphon feeders for something like this, but if you are any good at painting, use what you have. If you have multiple tips I'd change to medium or fine. Shoot a couple of test panels using sheet styrene and see what gives you the best results. They don't have to be big. 2 inches square will work

Thank you for the tips. Greatly appreciated. I note the paint looks almost ink-like in consistency. So, a #1 needle might be the go in the Paasche.

Might do some extra prep work on the body and think if there is anything that I want to add. But, I think the paint will go well with the simple rounded form of the 356. I have a feeling it won't be a quick job.
