I think I've re-discovered a painting technique that gives some depth to resin grill inserts.

I've painted resin grill inserts before; usually with a light aluminum paint (I use Tamiya Mica Silver). It gives a good color, but it has no depth and the grillwork can sometimes get lost in the background of the resin casting.

Right now I'm building out a resin Ferrari 166 M Barchetta and I wanted to see if I could get some depth to the grill. So, I first painted it flat black. Then I mounted it flat on my spray turntable and hit it horizontally and low with the Mica Silver. I gave it 4 light squirts; one on each of the four sides of the grill. Then I went back for a second coat with the silver so that all of the edges were silver.

It came out well. It was quick and easy to do. I can post a pic if you'd like.

Painting it black first, then using a technique called dry brushing on the higher raised areas of the object to show depth and detail.
To dry brush....dip the brush lightly in the lighter color, aluminum, and then run the brush on a cloth, paper towel etc, to remove most of the paint. Then brush the areas to be highlighted. Repeat as necessary.
That's how I did the grill on my Ferrari 166.

I used to use dry brushing on 1/72nd, and 1/144th airplane models. There's nothing else for interior details in the cockpit. Its just too small in there for anything else.
