Homemade water slide decal help

So I printed on Testor's decal paper and the images looked very crisp. I let them dry for about 4 hours then sprayed them with the Testor's decal bonder.
When I checked them this morning, images with red looked terrible.

I always let the ink dry overnight, this allows for variances in ink quality. Next when I do the bonder I do 2 light coats....first one "left to right", second one "up and down". I allow 6 to 8 hours drying time between coats (depending on humidity). Also I always print a "test decal" on each sheet in the corner; if this one fades or runs when put in water I add a thin coat of "Future" and let it dry overnight. Making decals is not an exact science :roll: Hope this helps.

I have had luck using Genuine HP ink cartridges and Rustoleum Clear Enamel. I also use the Rustoleum for my clear coat on the cars

Well.....I reprinted my above posted decals and they look great. I have a Brother printer and only use their ink.
I printed one set on clear and one on white. I will let them dry overnight then spray them with Testors decal bond.

Nest step ......learn how to print so that decals show up on cars that are painted in dark colors.
Or am I better off ordering decals online ?

For dark cars, you need to color match the background of the decal to the car... I sacrifice a sheet of decal paper, and print multiple shades of the color to check against the paint.

Then I set that color as the background for all the decals. Print on White decal paper.

You may need 2 layers decals for the whites and light colors to look right.

I said darker cars... But the method works for any cars that are solid color other than white. I will get you some pictures of a car or two I did, and I'll also post an image of the graphics I made the decals from to show you the background

Here's how I've been doing it................I print mine on a $50 HP using authentic HP ink.
I've tried double printing & applying them twice over each other & this works best for me.

Future is water based and can cause inkjet printed decals to smudge if you brush it on. For printed decals it is best to use OEM cartridges, aftermarket cartridges are often much less expensive, but the print quality may be a crapshoot. I have been using Testors decal bonder and have not had any problems using it with HP or Canon ink unless I laid it on too heavy.
