Pattos decals answered

This thread kind goes with the Future/Pledge thread.

After my recent paint job I had to find out why Pattos decals wrinkle.. His reply was simple. Only use Future over his decals as stated on his page. It's there, I just never paid any attention to it. The decals do not respond well to the classic spray clear coat. I'm not crazy about Future and never have been. That said. I will give it another go on my next project.

Sometimes I use just a very light coat of clear and the decals do not wrinkle. Do this once or twice before putting on a heavy coat to seal everything in.

However I also use MicroScale Micro Set and Micro Set to help the decals set into the paint. You can pick that up from a model railroad hobby shop.

Kinda strange. I have never had Future wrinkle anything at all, whether I airbrushed it on, painted it on with a brush or anything else. The only way I haven't used it is dipping, which is just a waste of Future.

Also weird, Future is acrylic, so what is the difference between Krylon acrylic and Future, other than the propellant?

The Future didn't wrinkle the decals. The spray clear coat did.

I have used an acrylic spray with out problems - Tamiya TS-13 can get a bit hot for the decals. I had the situation where I sprayed two light coast of TS-13 on a car and everything was sweet - when I did the heavier final coat things went pear shape. Lesson learnt - light coats for me now no more heavy top coats.

I never use Future anymore because it always yellows, not just on white but also on Gulf blue projects also. Its not right away but about 6 mos to a year I notice the yellowing starting. I have never had any problems with the Krylon crystal clear on the decals or yellowing after being on a car for over 2 yrs.
Another thing I always do is spray a light coat on the decal sheet before I use them, its not needed but I just like to do it to help give it a little extra.

I always put Future over decals before I shoot a solvent based clearcoat. Future is water based so it will not attack decals or paint. Future can cause some types of white paint to yellow, but I have never had a problem with Future over Testors white. Clearcoats use a mixture of solvents that might include ketone, acetone, toluene or xylene. If you use an enamel paint you have to be careful if you put a laquer clearcoat on top of it. Once I hit one side of a body with no problem, but when I did the other side the paint was damaged. Krylon Crystal Clear seems to be less likely to cause problems, but it does not resist chipping as well as products intended for automotive use. Lately I have started to coat everything with Future before I shoot the clearcoat. I have cars that have had Future on them for many years and I hace never had a problem with it turning yellow. I pour some Future into a small screw cap bottle and work from that. I never pour unused Future back into the original container.

Ok, good news. the Krylon went on beautifully. I'll post photos in a couple days. The not so news is that the decals were made by someone else. I hope to do another car over the weekend with the Pattos and see how it works. Thanks for the tip folks. So far so good!

I have Pattos, Jim Hellers, some custom made decals and some 60's and 70's Revell decals. I have found that anything placed over some of them caused them to wrinkle. What I do now is save a portion of the clear portion of the decal page and put it on a piece of scrap and then try my clear on that.

I have found it to be essential to use solve a set or micro set on the decals before any clear, including pledge with future shine. Doing that, I have not had a decal wrinkle in quite some time. I got that from my local hobby shop model builder who builds around a hundred cars a year. It certainly has saved me a lot of grief.

The first set that wrinkled on me I had paid a substantial amount to have a custom set of decals made and I had to have them remade. They look great now but that was an expensive lesson.
