Do you have a warehouse era established? If the building is to be prior to 1950s, the brickwork would be more articulated: pilasters, header strings, visible lintels and headers at openings, extra detail at corner and cornice. Earlier buildings would typically have lots windows because electric light was rare (or in filled if a renovated building). I understand it's an early mock up, but good base will make added details more believable.

You might consider darkening the brick tones to increase the sinister level.

My first thought from the photos was "urban alley": fire escapes, dumpsters, roof drains, utility lines, straight out of film noir.

Thanks JT. The era will be 50's to 60's, which means the abandoned warehouse would have to have been built in the late 30's or early forties New York. I'm just feeling out the atmosphere right now and have lots of research to do. Suggestions are always welcome of course. I like the fire escape idea.

External wiring (that was added after the building was completed), open rafters with a bare bulb and reflector, duct work on the ceiling, do a search of various words and phrases to find more details.

Are you going for inside or out? I really must get back to mine.

I had saved this photo for a future project after acquiring one of Munters Austin Specials. I just came across it and immediately thought of your project. Obviously predates your era, but some nice history expressed by the painted over windows, flue vents through the window, etc. Simple brickwork details to emulate too.

The Austin Harris.co.uk site is an incredible source of early racing images.

Ember - I haven't decided inside or out. Definitely inside, but possibly a wall or an alley on the outside. Size is an issue. It will be 1/24 and I want it to handle multiple vehicles, so it will be large. It will be brick, probably with a cinderblock foundation which I might make out of something cementitious. Post and beams are an option Steam pipes and conduit are likely. I'm resisting the temptation for complexity in favour of over all impression.

Foundation and stairs look very convincing, especially the wormholes and stain variation! I'll guess stained plaster in an inverted form? In our 1:1 buildings, it's the stair outside corners that take a beating and chip or spall off, we're always patching those.

Foundation, steps and platform were formed as they would be in 1:1.
