Very good informative post. I do that exact same thing for the vacuum forming I do.

Another source for plastic is your recycle bin. Our weekly shopping results in more then enough clear plastic to cover my needs. Especially good is the clear containers used for fruit and in my supermarket they even package leaf lettuce up in large plastic containers. All of this clear plastic is ideal for vacuum forming windows as it has a low temperature melting point and is easily formed using the technique Shotgun demonstrated.

I model in 143 scale and because of the size I use the Diecast car with the windows in place as the plug. The result is a perfect fit in in the resin copy shell that i have pulled from the same diecast.
