Strombecker Ford J car - upgrade with brass chassis

Got this Strombecker Ford J car body, another generous donation from my friend's recent stash find. After a quick look, it looked prime for a brass chassis.

So far, the body's just required some minor cutting of the interior tray and rear valence to clear the chassis. It'll stay in its yellow plastic finish with some black racing stripes and maybe black painted on the hood.

More to come.

Dan - I need to stop looking at your stuff...that's one more project I don't need LOL! I have the same car and have been thinking about doing exactly this.

Got my popcorn - get cracking!

Great seeing these old warriors getting back in service. The J car makes a sweet handling slot car, especially with a nice looking brass chassis like the one shown.
Nice work! looking forward to finished pictures.

Chassis's rolling. Power's a Plafit Cheetah with a Professor Motor 9t pinion and Slot It 27t crown driving Slot It 15 x 8 aluminum rear rims. The tires are PG urethanes in size 22125. Fronts are plastic Slot It 15 x 8 with their silicone tires. Guide is TSRF with the thick braid.

Body mounting posts are 7/32" Evergreen styrene tube with 4-40 brass screw inserts epoxied into position. Interior tray was trimmed at the front to clear the front post, the middle to avoid the motor and the rear to stay away from the tires.

Slot It GT40 wheel inserts seemed appropriate.

Not much body valence trimming, front and rear, was needed to fit the chassis.

Cosmetically, I just painted the driver figure. I'd usually do more but like this simple vintage look.

At 99g, it's got a nice planted feel on the track.

Good outcome for a body that probably sat in a box for 40 years or more.

Too much yellow. Broke it up with stripes and paint details. Made stripes from different widths of black Pactra trim tape.

Painted the front driving lights orange, hood ducts black and tail lights silver/red. Re-installed the chrome gas filler cap.

That's better.

Nice job on the stripes! Now it's looking like it needs some roundels and numbers ;-)
