Scalextric March 711 grand prix build

A friend picked up a box of slot stuff. Knowing that I'm into building, he kindly gave me a mostly intact old Scalextric March 711 grand prix car.

Well, I'm just chuffed by his generosity as I've always wanted this March with its strange front spoiler. I can hardly believe that the stash was located 20 minutes from my home. It's mostly the body pieces but that's fine. I'll update it with a current motor and drive train.

Stay tuned.

Epoxied in a 3mm thick piece of plastic Sintra to act as a FF050 slimline motor pod into the stock motor opening.

Image

Filed the opening and test fit a Fly March 761 motor over and over until the shafts (motor and rear axle) were at the same plane. The March also contributed its pinion and crown gear for a good mesh.

Image

The stock guide pushes the Slot It 15 x 8 plastic front wheels and tires quite high off the track surface. Did the original car with its even smaller front wheels/tires ever touch the track?

The rears are Slot It F1 rims with home made urethanes for good traction.

Just need some wheel inserts and paint details for finishing.

Another good result.

Cosmetics done with paint on the driver figure and valve covers. Wheels finished with reworked Slot It Jaguar XJR inserts, four (rear) and five (front) spokes.

Runs smooth like a Fly March 761 considering that's the source of the motor and gears. The fat rear tires no doubt contribute to this too.

Needs smooth throttle through tight corners as the guide design with built spacers in the guide and the chassis's guide mounting hole raises the car inducing de-sloting. Even then, it's a very nice driving car.

Good result.

Found a replacement clip on guide from my parts box. Lowered the front about an 1/8".

Image

Front wheels/tires are just barely above the track surface now. More to my liking, visually.

Performance's noticeably improved with no hint of tipping in the corners as before.

Like it even more now.

Dan that looks fantastic! I'm going to have to get this car now to go with my others. Really nice work and getting the nose down looks so much better.
