The Tale of the Wasp

Here's the starting point for the build of a Marmon Wasp, the first Indy 500 winner, back in 1911. Built by the Marmon Motor Company, powered by a big 6 cylinder inline motor and driven to victory by one of the Marmon engineers, Ray Haroun.

This one is a little underscale; 1/36-1/37, so thinking small will definitely come in handy on this build, which will be full of challenges.............

First challenge - where to put the motor and how to orient it(?) It's not only short for scale, it's also narrow and the FF-050 motor sort of overpowers it. It will definitely be a front motored car; just like the 1:1 racer.

I'm thinking, as Bob (chappy) mentioned earlier, that the only logical orientation for the motor is sideways (vertical instead of the usual horizontal). Here's an idea of where I'm heading:

Should be an interesting driveshaft extension/bearing set-up; looks like the shaft will need to go straight through the driver's torso (ooops!). But, there is room in the rear for the crown gear, so that's a plus.

Stay tuned............but it's apt to be a spell between installments on this build, which will need a custom brass chassis for the vertical installation of the slimcan motor. Time to think some more...............

Oh ya......you betcha!

I have yet to build a brass chassis and now I'm going to be building a very narrow one for a vertically mounted FF-050 motor.............what's wrong with this picture..................?!

I'm going to have to talk to Dennis, Chris, Marty and others about a skill-set transplant...............!

Use music wire for the chassis frame, and solder the motor as the anchor point.
The rest I havent got a clue lol.
But you can bet I will be watching you build it Allan.
All the best

Bob here is almost what I am talking about.
The motor in this one is simply screwed to the rear wheel mount, which I realize you cant do.
But turning the motor on its side you should be ablem to tack it into place up front by the front axle and guide carrier.
Anyway just a thought.
