We run on Carrera home tracks and at a commercial track on a Blue King. We generally run hot rod/modified cars based on H&R chassis and hard bodies. I really like the 60's race cars more than anything and talked the guys into building some Indy cars. I started by making a Watson roadster body. The 65 Monogram Lotus was next and I got those kits done and have finished (almost) a Jim Clark liveried example. Here are some pix of this project. Coming out of the mold now is the Novi special. Thanks to Lance Sellers for the loan of a Novi body. I have correct wheel inserts for the Lotus ready but not installed and some perfect windshields coming from Brad Blohm who loaned me the parts for my original mold.

This forum is very close to the original forum that was on AOL back in the late 80's. All us guys that were into slots suddenly had a place to share tips and figure out how to make cars work and run right when there were no parts available, no rtr cars being made. It was really the dark ages. The guys on this forum are much the same as that old bunch was way back then.

Dave, I made a Smokey Yunick (Simoniz) car using the Kurtis model. I think that is the kit Monogram called "Indianapolis Racer". Does that sound right? I'm not sure the Kurtis was what Smoky used, it may have been a Watson. Back when I did that, I hadn't researched and didn't know all the little variations in those cars, they all appeared pretty similiar to me. The Indy racer kit gets re-poped every few years and they can be found on Ebay for $10-$15. The same model also came in the Dirt Track Racing magazine dual release that had the Kurtis and the Don Edmonds modified. And...the edmonds modified has a chrome tree in it that is perfect to use with the old Strombecker Dirt Track Racer body. It has a 4 link front and rear suspension bars and a nice drag link and pittman arm. Lots of those cars ran that, I think. Big Donkey (Larry Baish) makes a nice resin Dirt Tracker. That body is based on the old upright dirt cars. Larry also makes some nice Monogram 1/24 Midget racer bodies. You can buy the new frames from Ed Sourbeck to fit them or solder up a frame. The Midgets are fine for a 1/32 track. Loads of decals available to make many colorful and interesting cars.

My dirt track mold is pretty well shot (it is 15 years old at least). When I was selling those cars off my website, I bought all the Buzco inline chassis that Gary Nowlin had. I bought two cases of the Modified racer with trailer. That was a repop of the Edmonds car. I put together kits with my resin body, driver and exhaust, the chrome tree, a set of of front and rear Riggen wheels/tires and a Plafit motor. I sold all 24 of those kits back in the 90's. Funny thing was recently I saw the example car I built on Ebay. I love the old open wheel cars and am now just casting tires and wheels so I can make curbside models just to set on my track! I don't need to motorize all of them! Indycals (Michael Portaro) has decals for so many great old cars that you can built a ton of beautiful 60's cars. He offers 1/24 and 1/32. As you can tell I can go on and on talking about this stuff!

Matt , there are a number of us into these types of cars.
Scale dosent matter, we appreciate this kind of work, and love to see pictures.
