Hi all you resin casters out there.

I have one quick question. I know that you can use plasticine to fill the body blank to make a mould, but has anyone used Play-Doh?

Being the Granddad of six Grandkids under 5, we always have a good supply of Play-doh, and it gets used enough to eventually get too hard for little hands to shape. I am hoping to use it for the above purpose, but would not want it to react to the silicone moulding substance and ruin the mould.

If you have used this successfully, please let me know, as I have a couple plastic bodies I want to cast without ruining them.

Two answers:

1) Yes it will work, but it "moves" a bit and it is possible you will not get a tight seal against the part. This leads to leakage of the silicone around it.

2) If you want thinner windows on a two-part mold, use the green automotive tape to seal the insides of the model. MUCH less resin flashing to clean up afterwards.

I agree...a seal against the body is doubtful...that silicone finds its way into every nook and cranny.

Keith, I have used Play- doh on a couple. It is just like the masters have said, There are way better options. It works OK for me because i am a Hack at casting. My stuff is cast for the Sole purpose of being cut up into Modifieds and jalopy's. Nothing like the Bodies used for modeling Accurate cars,such as the True Casters make for us. If you are concerned with Good quality, listen to them, they got their reputations from experience, and knowledge.

I still use modelling clay. It is easily shaped, and holds its shape well. Trying to shortcut or
hurry the process of making a master/mold is just not good practice. The mold should be as
close to perfect as you can get it, because every flaw will be present on every casting you
make. Taking a little time at the beginning can save a lot of flash clean-up and finishing later.
