Can Am and Cobra/Corvette Challege at Electron Raceway

The Can Am/Gran Sport and Cobra/Corvette Challenge classes are under development (a few of our racers have built cars for these classes). Images of cars from both classes are shown below. The Can Am/Gran Sport class features plastic Tamiya slot car bodies and utilize the Scholer chassis and Deathstar power. Tamiya produces several including the Lola T-70, early McLaren, Lotus, Porsche Carrera and more. The tentative rules require that the front wheels do not extend beyond the bodywork and specify a maximum rear track (rear wheels may extend beyond the bodywork. The True Scale Can Am cars have been a surprise. They are nearly as fast as their scratch-built counterparts and are a bit harder to drive but they do look great!
The Cobra/Corvette Challenge should be a great class. In testing Cobras and Corvettes have turn nearly identical lap times. This class is limited to 53 – 67 models to re-create the rivalry of Chevy and Ford in that era. Again track has been specified in order to equalize the cars. The 1/24 th scale 53 Corvette is the only model to be banned in the Cobra/Corvette Challenge because it is significantly longer than all others. Again, we are using the KISS principle. All that is needed to move from the Can Am/Gran Sport class to the Cobra/Corvette Challenge class is a simple body swap

Thanks guys,
These cars not only look good but are very fast. The only two classes that run better laps (and not by much) are GT1 (powered by Falcon 7 motors) and scratch Can Am resin cars (powered by Deathstars). The Charley Kolb, Quaker State Lola and the 60 Corvette are mine. The others were built by friend and fellow slot head, Ron L. Ron is a Ford guy so we have some spirited Chevy vs. Ford contests in this, the TA2 class and the Historic Trans Am class. BTW, we have a Yahoo Group site https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ele ... ceway/info You can look at messages without becoming a member but you must become a member to look at the photos and files section - these have some great looking cars and PDFs with great stories about the slot car conventions, a Trans Am article written by Sam Posey, speed secrets (well only some of them) and much more. Rules for membership are Yahoo's not mine.

Electron Raceway’s first “Cobra/Corvette Challenge” (aka CCC) will be held in concert with two other classes (GT1 and Historic Trans Am). The locals discussed the upcoming race to be held on Thursday, July 10, 2014, and decided to run Cobras and Corvettes. Since not all members have built a Corvette or Cobra to the “True Scale” specifications CCC will be a “mixed” race. James recently unveiled a 53 Corvette built to Pelican Park (PP) specifications that won the “main” at PP – quite an accomplishment for a non-local. Bob has a 57 Corvette meets both Pelican Park and OSCAR specifications that runs quite well. Both of these rides are shown below. Note that Pelican Park and OSCAR rides allow for O-ring front wheels and small (.790) rear wheels. The smaller wheels and scratch built chassis give these cars a bit of an advantage. Counterbalancing this is that the True Scale cars are angle winders (rather than an in-line configuration) and may allow for a wider track. It should be a very interesting matchup.
Back in 2007, Electron Raceway held a “Gran Sport” race that featured the small wheeled cars. Gran Sport includes Corvette and Cobra cars. I posted a humorous piece about this race in the Race Narratives and Results folder of the files section on the Electron Raceway Group site https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/Ele ... ceway/info That race was dominated by the Porsche 917 but included many other makes (cursor down for images if you don’t want to read my ramblings).
