1/25 Bugeye Sprite build

Postby VTECFOUR » Tue Jan 07, 2014 3:21 pm

Been on a 1/32 Bugeye Sprite build marathon for awhile, so after getting an incomplete Monogram 1/25 model kit, I've started another.

Image

The same PCS adjustable wheelbase chassis under one of my 1/32 cars fits the larger kit body just fine.

Image

Got a running chassis going with a pile of parts - BWA wheels/inserts, Paul Gage tires, Ninco Classic tires, Scalextric stock motor and Sport 9t pinion, SCX 27t crown, 3/32" piano wire axles, Avant Slot guide/braids, Slot It bushings and motor wire.

Runs really nice after attaching an under chassis slab of .063" lead.

Image

Mounted the body with a tube-in-a tube system like my other builds.

Did some filling and sanding.

Think I'll do an off white finish with a green stripe just like my friend's 1:1 Bugeye. Now to find a Sunday afternoon driver figure to poke through the tonneau cover.

Wow, that looks great.

When did that Monogram kit get released?

Chris.

Outstanding.

Tube in a tube system. I think I have seen this, but can you show more details on this please?

Thanks.

The body's pretty old, not a recent release. I think the original is from the 60's and it was re released later in the 80's or 90's.

Here's my mounting manner.

Materials: 2-56 x 1/4" screws, Evergreen no. 224 1/8" and no. 226 3/16" styrene tubing

- secure the 1/8" tube to the chassis with the 2-56 screw
- slip a longer 3/16" tube onto the smaller one
- trial fit the body and trim it close to your desired wheel to wheel arch height
- glob two-part epoxy on top of large tube and place body on top, quickly positioning the body with the desired wheel to wheel arch positions on all four corners
- after letting the epoxy cure, trim the large mounting tubes to
get your desired body height

In the end, the body's glued large post slips perfectly into a smaller secured post in the chassis. When you want to do some work on the chassis, just wiggle the body off to free it.

Hope this pic of one of my 1/32 Bugeye builds makes it clearer.

Thanks to my friend Doug for showing me this technique.

I noticed you did something to the front axle in the last picture...is that lead and an weight putty or tubing? I guess you've done enough of these cars you know how to weight tune them. The build pictures are great!

On that 1/32 chassis application, there was too much front axle flop, so I fixed it in place with a tube glued in with two part epoxy. Runs better now.

Just got a few coats of primer on.

Thanks Dan! I initially thought that it was a tube, but the way you notched it by the guideflag and mounting post made me think maybe I was wrong.

The project is looking good!

Been looking at an Immense Miniatures partial driver figure to poke through the tonneau cover.

Need to find some headlights and a partial window screen, maybe a Brooklands one, and then finish it off with painted taillights and grille.

Done. Immense Miniatures Graham Hill figure painted and installed. Rollbar added later.

Still looking for headlamps but I'm happy with the modeling and running results.

Here's a size comparison with one of my 1/32 Bugeyes.
