My second resin cast - Fat Fiat Abarth 1000

Seemed liked another opportunity, so I cast the body during my Fat Fiat Abarth 1000 build.



First pop has a good number of voids but I've learned from this. This casting is quite addictive.

I was curious about how much casting silicone you would use on a car this size? around a quart?

The Fiat's casting block took 495 grams of mix, 450 of base silicone and 45 of catalyst. In comparison, my Bullfrog roadster took 220 grams (200 + 20).

So you are slosh molding these? I haven't done A LOT of molding.. but those looked so nice I thought you might be doing a two piece mold...

I poured a Bullfrog from Dan's mould last night, and ran into a problem with some of the resin curing before the rest. So I scooped out the fast and continued to slosh the rest.

Oops! While I got complete coverage of the mould, when I pulled it I discovered it is almost paper thin, would you believe the body weighs 3 grams? I will let it sit for a while to really harden up, then I plan to paint the inside with epoxy to strengthen it. It should work, and I already have a chassis to fit it.

Lesson learned, pour as much resin as needed into the mould right away because any left in the cup sets faster than the stuff you are sloshing. If my plan doesn't work I will just pour another.

ps. A week later. I gave up on that body, it was just too fragile. Once I had decided to, I crushed it like an empty eggshell. I'll just do another, but Dan has more coming down the pipe that just might take priority.

A few things I accidentally sloshed to thin. I layed a little very thin glass cloth in those areas along with epoxy resin as you mentioned. So far so good.

I wish molding agent was free.. It is fun to make things using it.

Dan that look's good. Did you use the SCX gulf fat boy for the mould?
