Dallara problem

Postby Czar » Tue Jan 28, 2014 10:38 am

I have been tasked with tuning a couple of Scaley Dallara Indy racers. I would like to true the rear wheels and tires with my Tire Razor. But the rear axle assembly includes the suspension parts. Since the axles are knurled I don't want to remove the wheels. Does anyone have a solution?

I don't have one in front of me, but if I remember correctly (it's been a while), the rear suspension is a one-piece deal with a disc at each end with a hole for the axle to go through. This makes it impossible to put the pulley wheel on the axle along with the belt for tire truing, is this correct?

If so, there are two things I might try, but they're both 'invasive'. One, you can dremel the discs at each end, using a bit that's smaller diameter than the axle. If done right, you can then snap the suspension detail off the axle and put it on again later. Two, you can cut the suspension detail in half, push one half towards the other end, just enough to allow you to slip the pulley and belt onto the axle near one wheel. When you're done, reattach the suspension detail -- but you may need to make a custom spacer, since the suspension detail won't be doing its normal job any more.
