Ninco Healey upgrade

After seeing and running Harry's Ninco Jag with the PCS wheels on my recent visit I knew I had to do something similar. I had a Ninco Healey sitting around that I purchased about a year ago. I think this is the best looking one they have done to date so why not make it look better and have a great runner too.

Like Harry I also used the MT-1 motor with 9t pinion and Slot It 27t crown. Axles are drill blanks and I used some styrene tubing for axle shims in the front.

Then I also used the PCS wheels from Pendleslot Part #32207. I decided to use the tires that came with the wheels as I liked the soft compound they have. I decided against putting the knock offs on because I think it looked better without either of the styles that came with the wheels. I also colored in the grill with black acrylic paint to tone down the chrome look. In all I think it made a already great looking car look even better.

I wish these cars came standard with wheels like that - I would pay a bit more for them

The wheels certainly add to the cool factor. Great livery too.

I see you have glued the motor in...what about doing the bearings as well.
If you are running on wood, a lot of guys here add bearings or an axle tube to the front once the ride height is set.

The longer wheelbase Jag is a good handling car and used by many but the Healey is a nice change to see on the grid.

Those wheels almost look too good for that car!

But that grill blew me away. I recently darkened the grill on a Ninco Jag that I'm working on and that made a world of difference. But this Austin Healey looks completely transformed and much less toy-like with that re-done grill. Awesome job!

Do you ever leave the stock running gear in when you swap these classic Ninco's to the MT-1? It seems like my gears never properly mesh when I do that. I even use the adapter and have tried 9, 10, and 11 tooth pinions. The motor always seems too taxed and heats up like a hot plate, and the cars don't glide as well as those with NC-1's or NC-8's. Now, the Carrera Classics that I've remotored with the MT-1 run like butter, so I'm at a loss.

Thanks guy's :)

goose, I would have used the stock gears but because Ninco axle's are a bigger diameter and I was switching to a wheel that fit a 3/32 axle I had to swap out the crown for the new axle size. I don't see any reason why you couldn't just swap the motor and use the stock gearing if you are using the stock wheels. That should work fine too.

That is a beautiful car. You really did a brilliant job. Thanks also for the part number for the wheels. I will upgrade my MGAs now.

I must say that it looks a whole lot nicer with the wheels and what you have done with darkening the grill.

I believe that if you set the car out side and with the proper camera angle you could make us believe that it's a 1:1 car that you have.

It's people like you and the rest here that inspires me to do more with my cars and as soon as I get me and the misses moved in to a new place I'll be showing you all my work I hope it won't be much longer for me to get back to playing oops I mean working on my cars.

That looks amazing! My Dad likes it too, as I've been put on the committee to find some for him.

Really sets it off with the wheels! That's it, I HAVE to paint mine this year and get some wheels...
