If I may offer a bit of personal experience with the "Aurora Demolition Demon"...
That Aurora kit came out in the mid-60's, as I recall. As soon as it hit the shelves, one of the slot car magazines of the time did an article titled "Bad-mobile". (The name being a take off of the "Batmobile" that was popular at the time.) The article mated a K&B chassis to the body. However, I think I recall the conversion used an interior tray from one of the Aurora/K&B 1/32 bodied cars, like the GTO as a way to mount the body to the K&B chassis.
Anyway, I made one and it turned out great (for a 14-15 year old kid). I used mine as an oval dirt track car and ran it to death. This was the first K&B "Challenger" chassis car for me, and I liked the way they were made (easily adjustable wheelbase) and they were fast for a home set car... so I ended up purchasing more for other conversions.
So... there you have it!
EDIT:
Took a look at the Scalextric Derby video. Looks like a remake of Eldon's "Crash Jalopies" figure 8 set from the 60's. However, I think the Eldon's were better executed. "Way back when" I purchased one of those Eldon sets at a blow-out price and it was surprisingly a lot of fun! Wish I still had it.
