There were lots of motors in the early days of slot cars with that configuration. The best and most popular was Pittman. some of which were sold as Revell.

Good Lord, guys, that isn't mine! Its a picture from an old catalog. I hate to think what one of those would cost today. I just always thought they were cool. In the middle 60s, I dreamed about putting one under Ferrari 275 or 330 P, to show off the rear suspension.

I have one of those Ulrich chassis in 1/24 scale. I was lucky to get one 20 years ago.
All independent suspension, fully sprung, and a guide-flag-driven Ackerman steering system - Ultimate and Insane indeed.
I threw on a set of period-correct Russkit wire wheels (actual 'strung' wire wheels), in attempt to create what might be the coolest slot car rolling chassis from the Golden Age.
Interestingly Ulrich Models is in business once again, and although they no longer focus on slots they still sell their vintage 1950s-60s 1/24 scale plastic "Min Men" for relatively cheap!

Holy smokes. I never saw that rascal. What's the time period for that? I remember the Ulrich as being '65 or so.
