PARMA EDGE RTR

Postby Cosmic Bilby » Tue Mar 04, 2014 9:36 pm

G'day Guys,

Pete Richards at Nomad Raceway has started a new class for the Parma Edge RTR cars. The idea being anyone just coming into this part of the hobby can make a minimal investment of cash/time/skills and enjoy scale drag racing :)

The rules are very simple, Parma Edge RTR, it must remain stock issue with the exception of rear wheels and tyres (very few choices for the standard axle out there), the crown gear can be either a 33/34/35 48 pitch as per the type issued with the EDGE RTR (its like a lottery with RTR Edges, all three options come in standard out of the box cars). The lexan body can be exchanged for another PARMA lexan body. Other than these allowances, the cars must remain standard, including the Super 16D (fortunately they are sealed).

We had our first run with them the other night, my car (pictured below) ran a best of 1.146 on the 1/8th mile @12Volts without tyre goo (not allowed). I thought it was pretty quick for what it is, heaps of fun! The winning car (Kev's) was running into the 1.0's with Pro-Track rears on.

Big interest in scale drag racing in South East Queensland at the moment, a record 56 entries at Nomad Raceway the other night, plus tracks on the Northside and Southside of Brisbane, the future seems to be bright for this class of racing :)

The first thing to do with the Edge is to change the rear tires. The ones that come on the car
are intended for use on heavy glue, and are too hard for a dry surface. If you can get Pro-Track
tires, use the #241 Barracuda tires with 1/8 axle holes. You can trim them to fit your needs
if you want. Incedently, in the club section under Bensenville Bombers, go to the gallery, and
click on "Onion Grove Drag-a-Way". There is a video of a dragster making a sub-.9 second
run.

Hey Guys!

Mick, its only the Parma crown gear unfortunately. We had a look at a selection of Edge cars at club and they had either 33, 34 or 35 crown gears so Pete wrote up the rules to reflect that.

I was using mine at the Test and Tune tonight at club, its got the 35 tooth crown gear, had a tonne of wheelspin, did my best to reduce it setting up the wheelie bars as best I could. Did end up running a best of 1.083, but not consistent.

The other two guys were running 34 and 33 tooth crowns, best for the 34 was 1.060 the guy with the 33 tooth crown changed tyres as well (old tyres from many years ago, is an old timer at this), best time 1.009!

Dave, thank you for the info, I did spot the tyres you are talking about and ordered a set, but they will be a couple of weeks getting across the pond to Oz. I was hoping they would be a thing and Im glad you confirmed it, many of us are running a little blind in this style of racing (I've only really done 1/32 plastic chassis stuff really).

Dave, Ill take a look at that video shortly, Im really enjoying this "Pro Edge" class as are most of us, none of us are sure what they will get down to E.T wise. I thought anything in the 1.0's was good last week when we ran, .9's would be awesome, sub-.9's would be outstanding :)

Thanks for the info mate!

Rob; As you get more into it, the times will drop drastically. I have one set up for commercial track with
a GP-20 motor and 64 pitch gears that will get into the .6's. Change to a narrow funny car body and get
rid of the soft 1/16th diameter brass pin tubes. I put the brass pin tubes inside .078 stainless steel tubing
and run them through the larger holes in the chassis. Change the front axle to piano wire. I also changed
the rear axle to 3/32nd and added ball bearings. But you probably don't have to go that far to still get good
times. Just take one change at a time, when you are ready to upgrade.

I have one of those. Mine has an old Mura motor in it though. The car has got to be around 15 years old now. Still race it when I can.

G'day Guys!

I ran the Edge at club last night, the class is getting fast (for our club) really quick.

I found out when I turned up the two quickest guys had got their cars down into the .9's after I had gone home from the Test and Tune the night before, sort of left me wondering if I could get anywhere near that....

....All I had done in the interim was swap out the 35T crown for a 34T from my spare chassis, other than that everything was the same from the night before (still waiting on those Pro-Track 1/8th wheels Dave, hopefully this week).

Anyway we got a chance for a couple of practice passes, my Edge was down into the 1.01's which was a big improvement, and sure enough, Dave and Mark were sailing along in the .9's!

It all ended with me getting knocked out in the Semi's with a .991 (yep, I managed it, was stoked with that result), the other two times I can remember Dave and Mark running was a .989 and a .980 or possibly even into the .970's.....

They are a great class of car, everyone is lining up to get into the class now after they have had the opportunity to see them run, I think Nomad Raceway is onto a winner :)

Thank you RM,

The link was useful, thank you, I ended up finding a 33 tooth pinion and some rear wheels I was chasing.

I just want to clarify a few things about the rule stuff.

We have a really great little club (well not really little anymore, it is booming). There are rules and I enjoy being within them, it makes things fair for everyone and saves a tonne of angst.

Im not a win at all cost sort of person, I do this hobby for the enjoyment factor, for the models, for the mates I have there, to keep me sane in a sometimes insane world.

I enjoy it when I win, which in reality isn't often, I enjoy seeing my mates win too, its a small achievement we all can share in.

I gave up on the win at all cost *%$# years ago, even in my sport I just enjoy for enjoyments sake, Ive found my scores actually increased when I changed to this approach.

The guys at club are great, we all share the same concept of what its about, the class is what it is, but there are other classes where this sort of thing would be permissible (e.g, our "Dial your own" class). Thanks for the input in the thread RM :)
