I have to agree that the Porter Cable 690 is more or less the ideal router for many things, with five different handles, lots of bases, plenty of torque, etc. I have one hanging upside down under the deck of my table saw for a router table. But Porter Cable is expensive, and I don't think you can get your money's worth from one by building routed tracks. Its kinda like shooting a shotgun at a cockroach.

That router you picked up is the same model I picked up at Menards when I set out to build mine. Some folks may say that it is junk, but MDF is not hard on a router. Kind of like needing a razor to cut leather, but a butter knife is fine for butter.

That router along with the quality router bits made short work of routing my track. I was nervous about the little 1/8" bit and bought more than one just knowing that I would break one during the project. Never happened. The same bit I started the track with did the job and I'm sure it could do another track the same size.

I agree on the mounting holes. I made all kinds of fixtures for mine when I built my track. Found the plunge to work as well as one would ever need it to for the use. If one were buying a router to build a track, I would recommend this router. If you routed 50 MDF tracks you would not wear it out.

Yes, the main thing about using a router is to limit speed and cut in the proper direction for stability. The big enemy isn't breaking bits, it is dulling them with too much friction heat caused by moving too quickly or cutting too deep on the first pass (usually not the problem with routing slot car tracks).
