During this time, we have fabricated close to 1,000 driver stations for our customers worldwide. This article features our \u201cXLR and 3-Post Hookups With Lane Reversing Switch\u201d Driver Station Kit (SCC part number DS0320) shown below.<\/p>\n<p>The driver station featured in this how-to article has a blue panel; however, kits with red, white, yellow, green, orange, purple and black are also available. \u00a0This driver station is designed for controllers with male inline XLR connectors\u00a0 or alligator clips and features a toggle switch that lets you run your track in both directions. While not required, using a small ratchet and deep well sockets (11\/32\u201d and 3\/8\u201d) will make securing the 3-post hookups to the panel and mounting the driver station much easier. Wrenches will work too, they\u2019ll just take a little longer (and test your patience\u2026). This wire is readily available at home improvement centers and automotive parts stores.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> If you use our recommended wire lengths, you will need the following (total) lengths for each insulation color: black &#8211; 46&#8243;, white &#8211; 36&#8243; and red &#8211; 86&#8243;. Note these wire lengths\/colors are for one (1) driver station. <\/span>For convenience, we also offer high-quality Driver Station Wire specifically for this kit (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.slotcarcorner.com\/Driver-Station-Wire-Kit-2-p3353.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCC part number DWIRE-30<\/a> \u2013 shown below).<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000296.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\"><b>Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\">If you purchased our Slot Car Corner kit, the components are shown below. The kit includes a pre-drilled panel (available in multiple colors to match your track lane colors), panel mount XLR jack (bag on lower right), lane reversing switch (bag on upper left), 3-post hookup hardware (bag on lower left), panel mounting hardware (bag on upper right), tie wraps and an Assembly Diagram.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> The Assembly Diagram included with the kit is also a useful reference \u2013 we suggest referring to it in addition to these instructions<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000290.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\">Let\u2019s get started! First, carefully peel the protective covering off the front and back sides of the panel.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000350.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Installing XLR Jack on Panel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before installing the XLR jack, make sure the panel is oriented as shown in the picture below.\u00a0 The larger hole on the right will be used to install the XLR jack.\u00a0 Note the two (2) smaller holes on the outside of the larger hole &#8211; they should be positioned at 11:00 o&#8217;clock and 5:00 o&#8217;clock as shown.\u00a0 The smaller hole on the upper left will be used to mount the lane reversing switch.\u00a0 The 3 smaller holes in the lower left will be used for the 3-post hookups.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000352_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000353_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Insert the XLR jack into the larger opening positioning the release tab facing up or away from you as shown.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000354_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000355_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Square up the XLR jack to the sides of the panel.\u00a0 Use a small phillips screwdriver and 7\/32&#8243; nut driver or wrench to secure &#8211; <strong>do NOT overtighten or you could damage the mounting panel.\u00a0 <\/strong>Check for squareness &#8211; loosen\/re-tighten the screws\/nuts to adjust if necessary.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000359.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000364.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the mounting screws\/nuts will hold the XLR jack securely, we like to use some hot glue for added insurance.\u00a0 Turn the panel over and run a bead of hot glue around the circumference of the XLR jack where it meets the panel.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Be CAREFUL not to put any hot glue near the release tab mechanism<\/strong><\/span> (see area at top of XLR jack in accompanying picture from roughly 11:30 to 12:30).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000371.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Set the three (3) pieces of shrink wrap aside for now.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Cutting\/Crimping Wire for the Lane Reversing Switch<br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Tip:<\/strong> If you haven&#8217;t already done so, take a minute to download\/print the Wire Cut \/ Strip Diagram and refer to it as we work through this section. Here is the link:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/slotcarcorner\/image\/upload\/v1565115134\/DS0220_Wire_Cut_Crimp_Diagram.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wire Cutting \/ Crimping Diagram<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> For the first set of black switch wires, we will break down cutting \/ stripping the wire and crimping terminals onto the wires in detail including plenty of accompanying pictures. This will be especially helpful to those of you following these instructions with little\/no experience crimping electrical terminals on wires. For subsequent wires, we will just instruct you to &#8220;&#8230;strip such-and-such wire&#8230;&#8221; and then &#8220;&#8230;crimp such-and-such terminal onto the wire&#8230;&#8221;. If necessary, you can come back to the detailed descriptions and pictures provided here for the black wires.<\/p>\n<p>We will start with the three black wires that will eventually be crimped together using electrical terminals as shown below. The top wire is 9&#8243; long, the middle wire is 6&#8243; long and the bottom wire is 4&#8243; long. If you&#8217;re new to crimping insulated terminals, or just want a quick refresher, please read on. In the first picture below, we&#8217;ve &#8220;disassembled&#8221; an insulated electrical terminal like the ones provided in the kit. Note the &#8220;barrel&#8221; portion of the terminal that will be crimped to the wire does NOT extend all the way through the insulation. Therefore, it is VERY IMPORTANT to place your wire crimping tool over the portion of the insulation that covers the barrel. The second picture shows 2 crimps &#8211; one is crimped correctly and one is crimped incorrectly (and will fail). Make sure both wires are pushed through the terminal as far as possible AND the wires stay properly aligned. Start by carefully examining the bottom of the switch. Notice the numbers 1 &#8211; 6 embossed in the switch housing. Each number corresponds to one of the switch&#8217;s 6 &#8220;blade&#8221; terminals. You&#8217;ve completed the most difficult part of the driver station assembly (it wasn&#8217;t really difficult &#8211; just a lot of steps). Now it&#8217;s time to mount the switch to the panel. Your driver station will really start coming to life from here on out!<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll start by mounting the switch that you just wired to the panel. Insert the mounting washer over the switch&#8217;s mounting bushing with your other hand.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000377.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thread one (1) of the retaining nuts onto the mounting bushing as far as you can by hand.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000378.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Double check to make sure the switch is still oriented correctly in relation to the panel (refer to earlier step if you are unsure). Using a 9\/16&#8243; wrench, carefully tighten the retaining nut until you just feel a little resistance. <strong>Do NOT overtighten &#8211; you can damage the switch and\/or mounting panel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000379.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Turn the switch until the &#8220;long&#8221; side of the switch is parallel with the long edge of the mounting panel as shown. SNUG down the locknut to prevent the switch from turning in the panel. <strong>DO NOT overtighten<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000380_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000381_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Run a bead of hot glue where the switch housing meets the panel as shown.\u00a0 The bead of hot glue should run along both &#8220;short&#8221; sides of the switch (only one is visible in this picture) and the long side of the switch closest to the holes for the 3-post hookups.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Do NOT run a bead of glue along the long edge of the switch housing that is closest to the long (outside) edge of the panel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000384.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000382.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thread the second retaining nut onto the switch mounting bushing &#8211; when it makes contact with the retaining nut already installed, tighten JUST THE TOP NUT slightly so it acts as a &#8220;jam nut&#8221;. This will prevent both nuts from loosening.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">*** ACTION ***\u00a0 Need PICTURE!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Installing the 3-Post Hookups<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Start by joining\/connecting the 10&#8243; and 24&#8243; white wires together. Note the other end of both wires will not have a terminal crimped to it at this time. The picture below shows the ring terminal that will be crimped onto these 2 white wires.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000323.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Remove 3\/8&#8243; insulation from one end of each white wire.\u00a0 Align the wires and insert the wires into the barrel of the ring terminal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000426.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Crimp the ring terminal using your crimping tool.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000428.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To be absolutely sure the ring terminal does not come loose, use your soldering iron to solder the wires and ring terminal.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>** TIP **<\/strong> A small clamp or vise can be used to hold the wires so both hands are free to position your solder and soldering iron.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000329.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what the soldered wires and ring terminal will look like.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000331.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next join\/connect the 8&#8243; and 24&#8243; red wires together. insulation from one end of each red wire.\u00a0 Align the wires and insert the wires into the barrel of the ring terminal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000421.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Crimp the ring terminal using your crimping tool.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000422.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To be absolutely sure the ring terminal does not come loose, use your soldering iron to solder the wires and ring terminal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000341.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To make it easier to mount the 3-post hookups and route the wiring connected to them, we&#8217;ll put a 90-degree bend in each of the three (3) rings terminals.\u00a0 Position the ring terminal into a pair of lineman or slip-joint pliers as shown below.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A vise could also be used for this step.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000533.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s2\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*** CAUTION ***\u00a0 Before proceeding, study the pictures below VERY CAREFULLY!<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span>SLOWLY and carefully bend the ring AWAY from the wire as shown until there is roughly a 90-degree bend as shown.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000342.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000446_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000458_WM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Repeat the steps above for the remaining two (2) sets of white and black wires.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Your ring terminals with 90-degree bends should look like those in the picture below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000454.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s attach the wires\/posts to the panel.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We will start with the black wire and insert a brass machine screw through the ring as shown below.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000515.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, insert a metal washer over the brass machine screw.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000514.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Working from the back of the panel, insert the brass machine screw through the &#8220;middle&#8221; hole as shown.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000390.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the top of the panel, insert the black plastic washer over the machine screw.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Next, thread a locknut onto the end of the machine screw.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p8\">Hold the brass machine screw in place from the back side of the panel with a flat blade screwdriver while tightening the locknut with a rachet and 11\/32&#8243; deep well socket.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An 11\/32\u201d wrench could be used; however, it will be very tedious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p11\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><b>*** CAUTION ***<\/b> \u2013 <b>Use care not to overtighten the locknut \u2013 it just needs to be snug.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Overtightening the locknut could damage the plastic washer and\/or panel.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000394.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, install the white wire in the 3-post hole closest to the side edge of the panel using the same steps described above for the black wire.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000396.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000397.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Finally, install the red wire in the remaining hole using the same steps described above for the black and white wires.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000401.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000402.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using the picture below as a guide, install two (2) tie wrap around the five (5) longest wires.\u00a0 Note how the three (3) shorter wires that will be connected to the XLR jack are routed so they do not interfere with the five longer wires.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000403.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Trim the tie wraps.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000405.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparing Wiring For the XLR Jack<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Now that the lane reversing switch, 3-post hookups and XLR jack have been mounted, we&#8217;re ready to make the wiring connections to the XLR jack.\u00a0 Start by making a bend in the three (3) shorter wires as shown.\u00a0 Note the ends of the wires may not line up perfectly at this point &#8211; this is okay.\u00a0 Try to bend the wires so they come together gradually from the 3-post hookups.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000407.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When you are satisfied with the bends in the 3 wires, hold the wires firmly in place and trim the ends so they all line up as shown.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000409.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, strip 3\/16&#8243; of insulation from the end of each wire as shown.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000468.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use a toothpick or small paintbrush to &#8220;dab&#8221; a small amount of <strong>ROSIN flux<\/strong> in each of the three (3) solder pots on the XLR jack as shown below.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*** CAUTION *** Do NOT use acid flux<\/strong><\/span> (commonly used for plumbing applications)!!\u00a0 Acid flux will eventually corrode the wires and solder pots causing the solder joints to fail.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000469.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using your soldering iron, &#8220;tin&#8221; each of the solder pots on the XLR jack with a small amount of rosin core solder.\u00a0 Tinning the solder pots will make it easier to solder wires to each of the pots in a later step.\u00a0 Soldering instructions are beyond the scope of this how-to article.\u00a0 The basic steps to tin each solder pot are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Place the tip of your soldering iron on the back of the solder pot as shown below.<\/li>\n<li>Position your rosin core solder in the solder pot as shown below.<\/li>\n<li>Once the solder\u00a0 starts to &#8220;wet&#8221; (flow), remove the solder &#8211; you just need a little bit.<\/li>\n<li>Wait a second, and then remove the soldering iron tip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*** CAUTION *** Use only rosin core solder<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; do NOT use acid core solder.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000473.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The tinned solder pots on the XLR jack should look something like this.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000475.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>14 AWG stranded wire is a tight fit into the solder pots on the XLR jack.\u00a0 To help ensure a proper fit, twist the bare wire strands for each of the three (3) wires together as tightly as possible.\u00a0 Check to ensure there are no loose strands.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000195_Check.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000189.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next, &#8220;tin&#8221; the bare wires &#8211; this will make it easier to solder the wire to the solder pot on the XLR jack (described in an upcoming step).\u00a0 Start by using a toothpick or small paintbrush to apply some rosin flux to the bare wire.\u00a0 Then use the tip of your soldering iron and a small amount of rosin core solder to tin the wire as shown as shown.\u00a0 When tinning wire, you only need to just barely coat the wire with solder &#8211; don&#8217;t overdo it!\u00a0 Be careful to ensure the wire strands stay tightly twisted together.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000219.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Before proceeding, make sure you have slipped a short piece of heat shrink included with the kit onto each of the wires.\u00a0 Slide the heat shrink as far away from the ends of the wire as possible.\u00a0 A rubber band wrapped around the three wires as shown will help keep the heat shrink from sliding back down the wires while you solder them to the XLR jack.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000476.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Soldering Wires to the XLR Jack<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>***\u00a0 Please Note\u00a0 ***\u00a0 Because I am left handed, I prefer to solder the white wire to solder pot #2 first so I am not &#8220;fighting&#8221; with the black wire.\u00a0 I then solder the black wire to solder pot #1 and finally the red wire to solder pot #3.\u00a0 If you are right handed, you may find it easier to solder the black wire to solder pot #1 first followed by the white wire (pot #2) and then the red wire (pot #3).\u00a0 The wires can be soldered in any order you like; however, the pinout MUST be:\u00a0 1 &#8211; Black Wire, 2 &#8211; White Wire, 3 &#8211; Red Wire.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>*** Tip ***\u00a0 If you are new to soldering or are soldering wires to the solder pots for the first time, we strongly recommend practicing the steps describing soldering the 3 wires to the XLR jack in the following paragraphs\/steps a few times with the soldering iron turned OFF.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>*** CAUTION ***\u00a0 Did you remember to slide a piece of heat shrink over each of the three wires?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now we&#8217;re ready to solder the white wire to the solder pot labeled &#8220;2&#8221; on the XLR jack.\u00a0 You will find the number &#8220;2&#8221; embossed in the XLR jack housing.\u00a0 Position the tinned end of the white wire into the solder pot as shown.\u00a0 <strong>*** IMPORTANT ***<\/strong> DO NOT try to force the wire into the solder pot!<\/p>\n<p>Position the tip of your soldering iron on the back side of the solder pot as shown.\u00a0 Do NOT try to force the wire into the solder pot!\u00a0 When the soldering iron heats the solder pot sufficiently, the solder you placed in the solder pot earlier along with the solder on the end of the wire will melt.\u00a0 Once the solder melts, you can insert\/slide the wire all the way down into the solder pot.\u00a0 Once the wire is firmly seated in the solder pot, wait a second or two and then remove the soldering iron.\u00a0 Continue holding the wire in place for several seconds to allow the solder to setup.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000482.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now repeat the steps described above for the black wire to solder it to the solder pot labeled &#8220;1&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000484.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now repeat the steps described above for the red wire and solder it to the solder pot labeled &#8220;3&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000485.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Undo\/cut the rubber band holding the heat shrink out of the way.\u00a0 Slide the heat shrink on each wire so it covers the solder pots as shown.\u00a0 Be sure each piece of heat shrink is resting on the XLR housing as shown.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/homeracingworld.us\/TeamHRW\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/P1000490.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use a heat gun or hair dryer to &#8220;shrink&#8221;
