Since the inception of Slot Car Corner in 2006, we have offered a wide selection of slot car tracking wiring products and services including custom Driver Station fabrication and high-quality Driver Station Kits.\u00a0 During this time, we have fabricated close to 1,000 driver stations for our customers worldwide.\u00a0 This article features our \u201c3 Post Commercial Style Hookup\u201d kit (SCC part number DS-0100) shown below.\u00a0 This driver station is designed for controllers with alligator clips.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tools<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Caution:<\/b>\u00a0 <\/span>Be sure to read, understand and follow all instructions concerning use of your tools.\u00a0 <\/span>In particular, be sure to follow all safety instructions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the tools you\u2019ll need to assemble the kit.\u00a0 <\/span>While not required, using a small ratchet and deep well sockets (11\/32\u201d and 3\/8\u201d) will make securing the posts to the panel much easier.\u00a0 <\/span>Wrenches will work, they\u2019ll just take a little longer (and test your patience\u2026).\u00a0 <\/span>The rightmost tool (blue handles) is a wire stripper\/cutter.\u00a0 <\/span>The tool next to it (red handles) is a terminal crimper \/ wire cutter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

If you are purchasing a stripper\/crimper tool for this project, a basic tool like the one in the picture below will strip wires, crimp terminals and cut wire without breaking the bank.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Wire<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ll also need some 14 AWG stranded copper wire to complete the kit.\u00a0 <\/span>We recommend 18\u201d long wires but you can make them longer if necessary.\u00a0 <\/span>We will use wire with black, white and red insulation (to match the driver station hookups).\u00a0 <\/span>This wire is readily available at home improvement centers and automotive parts stores.\u00a0 <\/span>For convenience, we also offer Driver Station Wire pre-cut to the recommended 18\u201d lengths (SCC part number DWIRE-10<\/a> \u2013 shown below).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Step-by-Step Assembly Instructions<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

If you purchased our Slot Car Corner kit, the components are shown below.\u00a0 <\/span>The panel (center) and small bag on the left contains the components we\u2019ll be focusing on in this article.\u00a0 <\/span>The Assembly Diagram is also a useful reference \u2013 we suggest referring to it in addition to these instructions.\u00a0 <\/span>The hardware in the small bag on the right will be used to mount the completed Drivers Station to your track.<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s get started!\u00a0 <\/span>First, carefully peel the protective covering off the front and back sides of the panel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Next, strip 5\/16\u201d of insulation off ONE end of each wire.\u00a0 <\/span>Do NOT strip insulation off the other end of the wires at this time.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

To ensure the ring terminal will slide over the bare wire properly, twist the bare wire strands slightly as shown in the picture\u00a0 below.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

There should be no \u201cloose\u201d strands like those shown in the picture below.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Insert a ring terminal over the bare insulation on one of the wires \u2013 note there should be about 1\/16\u201d of bare wire that protrudes from the terminal barrel.\u00a0 <\/span>If necessary, remove (strip) more insulation or trim off excess bare wire before crimping the terminal.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Be sure the depth of the bare wire is correct and there are no “loose” strands.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Using your wire crimping tool, position the barrel of the ring terminal into the crimper.\u00a0 <\/span>Be sure to use the crimping area designated for non-insulated terminals.\u00a0 <\/span>Some crimping tools will also have different positions for the size terminal (14-16 AWG) being used.\u00a0 <\/span>Note the position of the \u201ctooth\u201d that will make an indentation in the terminal \u2013 it is on the \u201cback\u201d side of the terminal barrel, 180 degrees from the seam.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Make sure the bare wire is inserted as far as it will go into the terminal barrel.\u00a0 <\/span>Squeeze the crimping tool firmly to crimp the terminal to the wire.\u00a0 <\/span>Repeat this step for the remaining two (2) wires.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

The accompanying images show the front and back of the crimped ring terminals.\u00a0 <\/span>Note the crimp indentation shape (right picture) \u2013 your shape may be different depending on the crimping tool you use.<\/span><\/p>\n

Position the ring terminal into a pair of lineman or slip-joint pliers as shown below.\u00a0 <\/span>A vise could also be used for this step.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Before proceeding, study the pictures below VERY CAREFULLY!\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span>SLOWLY and carefully bend the ring AWAY from the wire as shown until there is roughly a 90-degree bend as shown.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Repeat the steps above for the remaining two (2) wires.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span>Your ring terminals with 90-degree bends should look like those in the picture below.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s attach the wires\/posts to the panel.\u00a0 <\/span>We will start with the white wire and insert a brass machine screw through the ring as shown below.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Next, insert a metal washer over the brass machine screw.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Now insert the brass machine screw through one of the \u201cend\u201d holes as shown.\u00a0 <\/span>Since this panel is symmetrical, it doesn\u2019t matter on which end you start.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

On the top of the panel, insert the white plastic washer over the machine screw.\u00a0 <\/span>Next, thread a locknut onto the end of the machine screw.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hold the brass machine screw in place with a flat blade screwdriver while tightening the locknut with a 11\/32\u201d wrench.\u00a0 <\/span>A deep well 11\/32\u201d socket will make this task MUCH easier\/faster if you have one.<\/span><\/p>\n

CAUTION<\/b> \u2013 Use care not to overtighten the locknut \u2013 it just needs to be snug.\u00a0 <\/span>Overtightening the locknut could damage the plastic washer and\/or panel.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what the white wire\/post should look like.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Next, install the black wire in the center panel hole using the same steps described above for the white wire.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, install the red wire in the remaining hole using the same steps described above for the white and black wires.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Use the tie wraps included in the kit to help secure and organize the wires.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Use wire cutters to trim the ends of all 3 wires so all wires are the same length.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Strip 3\/8\u201d of insulation from the end of each wire as shown.\u00a0 <\/span>Crimp a spade terminal onto each wire as shown.\u00a0 <\/span>Be sure to use the portion of your crimping tool designated for insulated terminals.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
