Is it the car or the paint? Well I do not hide the fact that the GULF scheme appeals to me. It is just like Black and Gold or that occasional shot of Jagermeister. However, this release has more going for it than just good looks as I soon discovered.

For some presentation is everything. As minimal as it may be for the hardcore race enthusiast, I truly appreciate the GULF packaging. Since I like the scheme it simply stands out for me. But I am not alone. Although it was not this car but the prior Porsche, as I stood in the slot aisle looking at my next purchase another customer was doing the same. I then heard: “Oh wow, GULF!” “Man that is just cool. I love that paint job.” Soon it was in his hands and out the door. 

So maybe the extra effort made on the packaging is not a waste as some believe?

The paint work is very well done. The entire model just has an excellent finish.

Underneath we see the now standard inline chassis configuration.

Something I noticed that others might appreciate is the open area around the crown gear. There have been some issues with the Porsche 911 where it might catch the rails or rub the track due to the fully molded chassis. Glad to see this addressed on this model. 

ROAD TEST

The model was tested on both plastic and wood.

The model runs just as it should on the track it was made for. Very smooth and quick and has plenty of magnetic downforce.

On our wood track I was very impressed. This car was smooth without much sanding of the tires. The stock tires really do not work that well on our surface, but that is easily changed as usual. What it did reveal is a very good platform to tune.

QUICK PIT STOP

The rear wheels are identical to the Porsche and the inner rib is slightly smaller in diameter than a standard Slot.it. That means no silicones I have will fit without severe cupping. That’s ok because I use Paul Gage on most all plastic wheels and they give me the grip I want for our track.

And this is really all the model needed for my wood track. I might play around with some weight here and there, but just new shoes made all the difference as it usually does.

This is just a nice slot car. It runs well out of the box and is easily tuned. I am enjoying these newer inline models and look forward to the next one. Easily worth investing in if the theme or car appeals to you.
