New Slimline Motor – The Minnow

A new choice for the slimline motor configuration is here. Nicknamed the “Minnow”, this little motor is a midrange RPM (18,000) option for those seeking milder action in some of their cars.

FF050, slimcan, slimline, you take your pick. These smaller motors are found in a variety of models. From Scalextric Classic Grand Prix to the latest Policar F-1.

The application for this motor for my own use? The Scalextric Classic Grand Prix Legends series. The motors that come stock are just too much for these smaller, lightweight models for my taste. With other after-market options the speed was almost too low for those I race with. So the search was on for that “sweet spot” in the middle.

I tested several motors and this one fit the bill. The RPM of these motors vary a couple hundred as all of our motors do. I use my simple RPM Test Rig and tested a pack of 12.

They all fell into 17,800 to 18,100 range. On our smaller track with handling being just as critical as top RPM, there was no advantage using the higher motor.

Another needed part was a sleeve for the motor shaft. Since all crown gears are made for 2 MM motor shafts, you have to sleeve the very end in order to fill the gap and allow proper gear mesh. Standard stainless steel tubing was the answer.

These will be available from Slot Car Corner. They should be online and ready to order within 24 hours.

This is a nice motor that provides decent speed and control. Always good to see more options for the home/club racer in our hobby.
