hi Tom. First off I'd like to congratulate you and the Edmonton crew for running such a well organized and executed event :text-bravo: .
The ideas offered here are strictly "icing on the cake" variety that I'll throw out for discussion:
1. Instead of resetting the cars back on the start line after each driver's stint in a lane, what about just restart the cars from the position where they finished the previous stint. This would space the cars out for all starts except the beginning of each lane's heat, reducing the number of lap 1 "incidents" due to congestion. Also it would slightly reduce the roundoff error from scoring to only the nearest 0.1 or 0.05 lap after each stint. Calculations for individual driver scoring would be slightly more complex but should be easily solvable with a spreadsheet .
2. Speaking of first lap deslots taking out innocent competitor around them (although the quality of driving was such that there were commendably few), what about staggering the start by a foot or two for each lane - outside lane going into turn 1 starts farthest forward, next lane in a couple feet back and so on to the innermost lane farthest back. Used in conjunction with the previous suggestion, a car would only loose (or gain) a few feet in any particular lane and that would be evened out as the cars rotate through the lanes.
3. A second monitor displaying the race timing computer, remote from the racetrack where non spectating team members could view it would be a nice extra. It would allow on deck drivers/team captains in the pits or away from the track to know how long until their stint and how their team is doing.
Thoughts on the above?
cheers
Scott
