While trying to decide on a car, I researched the 512S. According to the racingsportscars web site the ‘open cockpit’ 512S participated in Can Am but not the ‘closed cockpit’ version.

My question is do we need to specify an open or closed cockpit car if we run a 512S? I’m OK either way and am in no way trying to rule one way or another, just curious if I will pursue building one.

Gotta love Ferrari using the same number scheme for multiple types of cars, not confusing at all!
This was actually kid of fun looking into, I never knew there was a difference.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike, Pretty much, the number designation on a Ferrari only tells you about the motor. "512" meaning 5.0 liters, 12 cylinders. You're right about the 512S variants, there were several of them. As far as I know, all of the 512S cars that ran Can-Am; 3 of them in 1970; Andretti, Adams and Bondurant, were all "topless" cars, but I wouldn't call them open cockpit; because at that point Ferrari was trying to minimally modify their FIA endurance cars to run in Can-Am. The 512P and 512M models that replaced the 512S Can-Am car in 1971, as well as the later 612 and 712, were open cockpit; more in keeping with the theme of the Can-Am races. This separates them from the 512S coda lunga (long tail) versions that were FIA endurance racers, the longer tail was designed to make them more stable at the speeds that they reached on the Mulsanne Straight at Le Mans and other tracks.

Alexis in Greece is doing a 612; I sure would like to see someone do the 712; the largest motor that Ferrari every built!

Here's a model of the Adams 512S Can-Am car from 1970.

You could of course always get one of the resin Racer open top 512S's: currently they go for "only" something like $215..... :D On top of that they are the endurance racing models but in general appearance they are close enough to the CanAm cars I would think. I have one and it is GORGEOUS! I am of course silly enough to actually race it....

Hi Rossko, We reached our 32 car maximum last weekend, but I have started a Waiting List; I'll put you on it. It would be great to see a car from down-under in this series!

Where would I find a 712? I was going to do the RMS Resin 612, but David said the mold was too tired and he’s not sure he will make a new one soon as he has other projects in the pipeline.

Anyone had success getting one from Dart hobbies?

I've gotten tires and other items from Dart Hobbies in the past and the service has been pretty good. I have no experience with the bodies, but maybe someone else has. I have Art's email address if you want to check with him before ordering.

I had a look at the Ferrari 612 kit from Dart Hobbies and it looks very nice to me; as does the McLaren M12.

I might try reaching out to DART, I have the email. I was hoping their web store was up and running. Not as of yet.

So far I've looked at Ferrari 612, 512S, McLaren M6B, Lola T70 and T70 Mk3. Im not sure what I'm going to run.
The research and learning more about Can Am has been entertaining!

I have been thumbing through my CAN-AM 50th Anniversary book by George Levy, and now hunting for his first book from 1995 which has the complete running order of the cars by year etc.
Whew, this is got my attention for sure.

Allan,
Saw this on E-bay today. Looks similar to the car you posted. Let me know before I pull the trigger on a purchase.

Hi Arrold, Yes, that's a 512S like the ones that ran in the Can-Am. Although that's the FIA Endurance racing version; I think all the 512S Can-Am cars were all run without the top, it's still fine. That car is good for this series.

Some of you have asked if cars that are not on the list that's on page 4 of this thread are legal for this series. The answer is yes, as long as they ran in at least one Can-Am race from the period '66-'74. The cars that are in the list on page 4 are those that scored at least one point during the season. But, there were many other cars that did not score any points.

So, in the interest of being clear on that point, and also to provide some of you who have asked if the older cars, like Lotus's and Coopers, were legal, with options, I'm posting the below two links to RacingSportsCars.com. On that site, you can search all of the Can-Am races from '66-'74 and see both the field that hit the grid, as well as those that registered for the race, but didn't show up.

The two links below are both from the first year; '66 and so will capture more of the older cars. They are for two of the most popular tracks; Mosport and Riverside. Click on the links and have a look at the entire field. There are some options there that may be attractive to some of you.

http://www.racingsportscars.com/entry/Mosport-1966-09-24.html

http://www.racingsportscars.com/entry/Riverside-1966-10-30.html

If you have any questions, just post them to this thread and we'll try to get the answers out to you.
