When does your AC unit stop working?

Postby HomeRacingWorld » Mon Jul 17, 2017 7:46 am

When the hottest week on record is in the forecast

Looks like a bad capacitor. If you see a mushroom cloud near the Midwest? Don't panic...it means I tried to fix it myself. :laughing-rolling:

Well by golly, it IS the FLux Capacitor! I can fix this. My Dad was a TV repairman.

Oh...Anyone have a Delorean I can borrow?

why did it blow the cap?

Is the top of the cap all blown out like a can of soda you left in the freezer?

does your condenser fan make a lot of noise when it starts up?

you might need a hard start cap.

Something that not a lot of people are aware of. Beginning January 1st, 2020, sales of the current formulation of Freon refrigerant will be banned in the US. I don't even think that retailers will be able to sell their existing stock after that date, unless they have special permit from EPA. I don't think the new refrigerant is compatible with the old, so they cannot be mixed. That also means that if you have an older unit (sometimes not even that old, as it is still being used) and you have trouble involving the refrigerant, you will have to replace your entire unit. This will affect cars too. The current formulation of Freon is terrible for the ozone, so it is being phased out. The number designations are a little confusing, but It is important to note that HFC refrigerant such as R134a, R410A, and R404A are being slowly phased out due to their high global warming potential. They will most likely all be replaced by new HFO refrigerant 1234YF or equivalents.

^ try propane. :)
There are even a few youtube videos showing a how-to swap out. We had our work van swapped to propane for the AC in the late 80's early 90's and it worked well.

Mom stayed with me last night. High was 98 yesterday. AC tech said Capacitor blew. Replace and cleaned the coils. Mom has AC as of 9:00 this morning. Temp here is 95 headed to 97 with a heat index of 105. Humid very sticky. Last night was no better at 10:00 pm.
