Off the wall project

Postby btaylor » Sun Jun 25, 2017 4:53 am

Well, I can blame Harry for this one! A week or so back, Harry had posted a neat picture on FB. It was grown men getting ready to race 2/3 scale vintage Grand prix style cars. It peaked my interest to say the least, so I did some research, and found that they were Cyclekarts. Those that know me, are aware that if it has wheels, I will build it! so off I went in search of plans and parts. These cars are very individual, and they have a "spec" chassis, so they can be raced together. If you get a chance to google these cars, I think you will enjoy the fun that's built into them. To date I have a near rolling chassis with most of the big parts acquired. Thought I would share this with all the other gearheads on the board.
Here are some pics of my Toy car, and yes, they actually race these all over the country, on road and off.

Great stuff! Here is a 1930 Bugatti Type 44 that I saw at the Greenwich Concours this year.

Yeah, it looks like a blast and I can imagine myself shoehorned into a tiny Marmon Wasp wearing a Barney Olfield outfit, and all that... But, Bob! What a welder you are! That is fantastically good work on that chassis. Congratulations, and it has rolled a foot yet!

Is that a reduction setup with a fanbelt transfer to a chain and sprocket drive?

Yes Rob, that is a torque convertor drive as you mentioned. it gives a great amount of take off, and then converts to final drive (witch is 10/72) with 17" wheels and a 22" inch overall height, these thing can reach 50-55 MPH! with a stock motor. And thanks for the welding Kudos, I have been fabricating all my life, and do enough welding everyday to get real tired of it! lol. I look forward to doing exactly as you described, donning a fliers cap and goggles, and let her rip!

That is really looking fine and I really like the touch of duct tape added to the front tire.

As always, I envy your skills.
Way back in the 80's Motor Trend or Popular Mechanics or such had an article on the these and I had a real Jones for building one. The article discussed more about the racing than the builds. One guy made a comment about how much they looked like little coffins & that was enough of a visual for She Who Must Be Obeyed to put the kibosh on any plans I had to race. I remember the drivers adopting fun nom de guerres that fit the era -- like Count Chocula, Baron Von Crashenoffen, Earl of Driften, Sir Brakesalot and such. Please keep us informed of your progress. You know you're going to have to build two so they can race.

Bob, I was just drooling over the photos again, and I noticed you did the same thing to your mower that I did. Mine was because I slid 20 feet sideways and crashed into the creek, nearly breaking my neck as bad as I destroyed the hood of the mower. So its now an "open" engine hot rod mower... sort of.

Those are AWESOME!
One question, I don't see any brakes... does that big drive gear also serve as a brake rotor?
Very, very cool. -- Ernie :>)
