1/24 Cox Ferrari Dino

Picked up another parts 1/24 Cox Ferrari Dino to combine with my gift one for what looks to be enough pieces and spares to recreate a complete car.



Missing a Spyder windscreen and one wheel knock-off. Anyone know a source for either?

Also, how would one refurbish the magnesium chassis and wheels?

Hello Dan, nice find!!......one of my alltime favs.!!

Professor motor has repro windshields (look in Vintage/reproduction) that are gorgeous, and they also sell knockoffs (again in Vintage/reproduction), but you will need to buy a set (4).

As far as the chassis/wheels, perhaps you can post a pic. or two.....depending on their state there are a few different methods for re-conditioning, depending on how much work you are wanting to do, and what tools (bead blaster, airbrush etc.) you have available.

I have attached a few shots of a Dino I did several years ago.......it has a PM repro windshield, and has had the chassis restored/wheels painted.

And a couple of chassis shots.......on this chassis, after cleaning, I gave it a quick shot of Tamiya light gun metal spray (it is a lighter shade in person)......if this is acceptable to you it is an easy process. However, if you wish to restore the chassis to "minty" perfection, you will need to lightly bead blast it, and then give it a very very light (and erratic) dust of Candy red paint with an airbrush.

As many Dinos ran with yellow wheels, I used Tamiya Chrome yellow spay after cleaning and priming them......this will stop the magnesium "fuzz" oxidation

I have no experience with these Cox cars and the instruction sheet is long gone so this info and pics of your build are much appreciated. It's gorgeous by the way.

What do you use to clean the chassis and rim fuzz? A tooth brush and some dish soap?

I like to bead blast and clear coat magnesium and paint the wheels yellow. Some guys use lemon juice to clean magnesium. They soak a short time, hour or so and then toothbrush and rinse with baking soda to neutralize the acid. If you leave it to long, they say it eats up the magnesium. I think bead blasting is best and many mechanic shops have the equipment to do it. If you totally take apart your chassis and take wheels, frame and drop arm to a shop with a cabinet they will probably do for you and probably for no $. You could even send it to me and I will do it for you. It will be appreciated by the shop that does it if you drive 4 nails into a board to put the wheels on while they blast them. They are hard to hold with the heavy gloves you have on inside the cabinet. The nail board makes it much easier and leave the nails to stick out at least and inch.

If you clear coat the mag parts, the color changes to a dark gray, but it never oxidises again.
