I have seen very detailed rules online, regarding class, race, heats, equipment, etc.

I have a more general question that would come even before all of that - How do you handle cars getting off the track, either totally (they fly off of the table or off track somewhere) or simply just are slightly off of the slot? Are there any common guidelines that are used?

As I put my track together we have had some of my kids and their friends over to have some fun and we can't come up with a decent kind of a guide as to how to actually do some racing and keeping track of who wins/loses, etc.

I have seen some of the club rules online but they are very detailed and seem to assume what I asked above so it is not addressed.

Crash and burn...you de-slot once, you're finished....Or if you de-slot twice or three times, you're done.

Rules can vary quite a bit from club to club. My HO club is regional, rather than local, we only race once a month. We run on both ovals and road courses. On most road courses the races are marshaled, providing that we have enough people to cover the track properly. We have one track with spots that can't be reached, so just for places like that we use track calls. On ovals we always use track calls when cars crash. For track call races we asses a one lap penalty for anyone involved in a crash. There is a maximum number of crashes allowed, for a 12 minute race seven crashes and you are parked. If there is a rider we do a track call. We normally only allow repairs or tire cleaning during green flag conditions. All of our races are round robins with timed heats, so each driver will run all of the lanes in each race. We do not do crash and burn, I for one am not willing to drive two or three hours to a race that might be over for me in seconds after someone crashes into my car.
A normal race day usually includes 3 to five races. Often a racer will have to choose between two classes. We sometimes finish our day with a consolation race, so more people get a chance at a win.
At least once a year there is a team race, the teams can be determined several ways. Sometimes there is a random draw, other times we have used the results from a previous race with the highest scorer being teamed up with the lowest scorer and so on.
