Question about the Hawk 7 motor by JK Products

Postby qball41 » Tue Jul 24, 2018 8:42 pm

Am I correct in thinking that this is a 18K motor and similar to Scalextric stock motors or am I off base?

Thanks in advance for your guidance.

Chris,

That is VERY helpful, thank you!

If I can indulge you one more time, where do the pla fit Cheetah II motors come in?

Try the Gator motor from SCC for a Scalextric drop in replacement.

In looking for motors for our Monday nite guys, I tried several cheap Chinese motors and ended up with this one.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-6V-12V-21000 ... 2749.l2649

I've taken one apart and the brush setup and whole assembly is the same as an MT 5 or a Jaws. It is the standard fk 180 size with standard size bearings so it fits all the same frames as the long can motor. It is rated 21k rpm and instead of gearing around 2.7 - 3 to 1 we found about the same speeds with 4 to 1 gearing with moire torque and better brakes. These motors are $2 each with free shipping, but no packaging.

JK Hawk 7 OR H&R Hawk?

Postby SuperSlab » Wed Jul 25, 2018 10:19 am

To the OP qball41:

I suspect we may be looking at two different Hawk motors here:

The JK Hawk 7 motor that you enquired about is as Chris W said a beast, running at a gazillion RPM and big torque. On top of that it is an FK130 frame motor, not an FC130. This is absolutely NOT a Scaley stock motor replacement.

BUT

The H&R Hawk motor is a different thing altogether. This one is definitely a reasonable stock Scaley replacement. Like the Scaley motor it is an FC130 size motor that turns roughly 18K. It does have a fair bit more torque than the stock Scaley motor but certainly similar-ish in performance. Is this not possibly what you had in mind?

First, I appreciate all the answers and information!

Harry, I will look at the Gator motor from SCC.

SuperSlab The motors I was asking about were the JK Products "Hawk MB Motor" - thats what is says on the packaging. I got them from a local commercial track as they were the tamest motors they had. I find that on my small track they run comparable with some pla fit Cheetah II motors I have. I asked about the Scaley motors because I'd like to try something even tamer - especially for the kids that race with us.

Application: I'm running on a 4 lane Carrera oval track, using primarily 1/32nd Womp chassis cars with a vacuum formed body. Here is a link to the thread about the track.

viewtopic.php?f=10&t=18790

In addition to the Womp chassis cars, I also now have a couple 3D printed cars. The motors discussed above move the cars pretty good, but as I said, I'd like to see how they perform with a lesser motor like a stock scaley to see if that would help less experienced drivers. I know that they will have less torque, and may start off a little slower, but I'd like to try them.

Additionally, I'm curious if they would limit amp draw, but still perform enough to be fun. Currently, we're running with Carrera wall-wart power and its not enough for 3 cars let alone 4. I've been planning a power supply upgrade and talked with Harry about it. I'm concerned about how the power supply upgrade woud work with the 2.4ghz remote throttles because they are VERY nice and I hope not to lose them! So, I'm also wondering if the tamer motors would limit amp draw so we can run off of this power supply, but still be fast enough to be fun. I.E. slide through the corners with these heavier chassis.

Thanks Chris.

I had a track with a quality adjustable power supply years ago, so I understand the benefits they bring. I'm looking at purchasing the Circuit Specialists 25 Amp power supply that Harry has reviewed.

Great to hear that it won't affect the existing controllers! That was the primary challenge I was trying to avoid.

There are many versions of the JK Hawk motors, and the naming conventions are very confusing.

The motor called just a JK Hawk is similar to the ProSlot Euro motor, but does not have the same endbell molding that the ProSlot has, so it is not a direct fit in a plastic car where an FC motor fits. It is also way too powerful for that sort of frame.

There is then the JK Hawk 6, which is the same format can, but with Neo Magnets and a slightly different armature. Again, not useful for plastic cars.

The Hawk 7 is, as Superslab pointed out, an FK130 size motor, with sintered neo magnets and high rpm. This is typically used in 1/24 scale racing in steel chassis under vacuum formed bodies.

The Hawk Retro is a slightly de-tuned version of the Hawk 7, legal for all 1/24 scale Retro racing, but again probably a bit much for 1/32 plastic cars.

The Hawk MB is a motor designed to replicate the Slick 7 Mini-Brute motor (hence the MB designation) Once again, a little less performance than a Hawk Retro, these are often used in 1/32 brass chassis cars on commercial raceways.

Finally, the Hawk 25 is a 25000rpm version, popular with many hard body 1/24 classes and scale car racers running cars like the Europeans run. This could well be used in a 1/32 plastic car, especially on longer tracks.

The FK format motors are the same length as the FC format, and the can end bushing is the same size, but the endbell detail is different. You may be able to use the Changing Gearz adaptors to fit an FK into the 180-series long can motor pods, or if into a non-podded car that had an FC motor, perhaps a liberal amount of hot glue would work, but I have not tried it so I'm guessing! Any pod or chassis that has screw mounts will work though.

I hope this helps. I know JK could have helped us by using more differentiating names!

Mark Thomas has an MT1, I think it is, that is rated 14k. It is same dimensions as the small Scalex motors. I tried some in heavy 1/24 brass cars and they weren't very good, I bet they would be good in womp chassis with vac bodies and easy to drive for newbies.

Variable power supply is also an answer. There are still 30 amp 9-12 volt ham radio power supplies on Ebay for under $40, with free shipping. I have used these since I quit an old Sears 10 amp battery charger from the 50's, which I used for about 25 years with no problems.
