Midget Mania Continues!

Postby btaylor » Sun Apr 30, 2017 7:30 am

By now, All of you are sick of seeing these cars I am sure! But I had to share this one anyway. It is quickly becoming one of my favorites, if that's possible? I like them all. I went for a Polished Aluminum look on this one, as seen on The Caruso car from the early 50's, and others also. I used ACE brand Chrome/aluminum, to get the effect, and used Future to keep from dulling the shine, and to seal the decals. Working with a bigger scale like this, opens up a few opportunity's that I am happy to take advantage off. Like Decals that are not available for other scales. The Flying A decals used on this one, came from our model railroading friends. They are HO scale Service station units. The rest of the build is pretty much spec for my track. 2mm brass rod chassis, Hawk motor, 9/31 gears, cut down H&R wheels, running urethane tires from SGD. Parma guide, big mama braid.
And of course the Monogram P1 midget kit in 1/18 scale. I did another little trick on this one that I had done before. I cut the driver figure in many pieces, and worked him over to get a more aggressive driving stance. It comes out similar to the Hotshot driver, just a little older version. Still have the engine to do up yet, and all the small stuff, but once I get this far, its time to share. Hope you all can sit through another Big Midget build from Crossroads Speedway!

Yes, this is the best one yet!

I did the aluminum paint trick on a 289 cobra, and then used steel wool to make look 'brushed' - straight out of the development shop. Pretty cool look.

I think 'animating' the driver is a *big* improvement. The driver figure on these kits always seemed a bit 'off', stiff, toy-like.

I will agree with another comment or/post someone had made on another of your giant midget threads - I think the 'main frame rails' would benefit from being made out of spring steel, piano wire, whatever it is called, steel rod maybe about .055.

Anyway best looking big small car.

Great job!

Thanks all! I like the look of this one too.
The frame rail thing is kind of a purpose built situation. Since i dont float these bodys, i use the body as a portion of the rails. I also temper the brass just before paint, and that stiffins it up pretty well. These cars go in flat, and come out pulling the left front wheel a bit, so i think i am on the right track with this design. They handle as well,or better than the cutdown H&R chassis, and weight is less.
It is worth a try though, i just didnt see the need to fix what aint broke.Lol

Thanks to Bob I finally got this one finished up. He prepped the chassis which was far beyond my skill level and I am truly grateful. Took a while but last night "Midge" finally hit the track.
