I was there when Dave was packing the cars wrapped in padding in their own compartment of a larger container and as usual I thought he was nuts/OCD for going to such great lengths to insure the integrity of the cars. Ouch, man that is a shocker :doh: I agree looks like compression. Forums Cup cars are boxed in a box 2 cars max. Then over cartoned. From your picture of the container I thought you had a good thing going. Not sure if you had foam between the plano box and the carton or not. This may have prevented the damage. As a former UPSer we encouraged 2" minimum of cushioning between the product and the inner carton wall. This could be bubble wrap, styrofoam, soft foam, peanuts, last but not least paper.

There were 34 cars in this carton of cup cars in 2017.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the Plano boxes are very compliant and the sides will bend and then re-form to their original shape. The injection molded plastic and resin bodies on the cars are, however, much less compliant (stiffer), so on impact those thing that are less compliant will bear the brunt of the damage. It looks like most of the damage was "downward" (down on the tops of the cars) and if the cars were packed such that the top of the packing box was also the top of the Plano boxes, then I would hazard a guess that something very heavy hit the top of the box, or the top of the box hit something very hard, and those cars that were nearer the top of the Plano boxes probably sustained more damage than those towards the bottom. I, too, thought that David's packing job was over the top and was, in fact, going to use it for the Can-Am Proxy cars........ Live and learn.

Wow - that's some bad luck. I think David's decision to return all the cars is the right one. There may be some non-obvious vulnerability in the way the cars were packed, but the more likely explanation is that the box was subjected to an unreasonable shock or crush due to carelessness by USPS. Perhaps one of the problems with shipping a sturdy looking container is that it's the one that goes on the bottom, or is more likely to get rough treatment. I recently read about a company that makes high end bicycles experiencing a lot of shipping damage. They tried different ways of protecting the bikes, but nothing helped. Finally they started marking the boxes to make it look like there was a big screen TV inside, and shipping damage dropped dramatically.

Very sorry to hear this news. As a proxy host i know the extent the various organisers go too in packaging . Cars do come back in pieces , but usually due to on track incidents.
Kudos for trying a better mouse trap David .

Don't worrry about cancelling this great race and re-scheduling until next year. It is one of those unfortunate events that no one can predict...If I get the chance to post a video about one of the major shipping company loading boxes on their 5 ton truck, it will as it just shows how boxes are tossed from one end of the truck to the other...I had a buddy years ago that worked for Fe----x when he was in high school loading trucks at night...they went out of their way to damage boxes, especially if they had 'fragile' on them... a real shame but that is the way of the world I guess. I didn't see the Heartland Camaro in the picture, hope she is 'ok' and will be back next year. Again, sorry to all the proxy participants for their damaged cars.

Truly unfortunate to hear this and see the damage to some drivers cars!!! Betting others are damaged unseen yet...hope not!! Dave, thanks for all the effort you put into this...hope the rest of your year goes well with out hitches and you can also put my entry fee towards future endeavors as was mentioned early to make it easier for you!! Truly disappointed about not having a 2018 proxy. I was looking forward to many months of entertainment as the cars raced around the country. Sorry for those that sustained damage to their cars. Dave, no need for a refund, you work hard to make this a great proxy, and I'm also indebted to you for all the help your track building blogs have provided. If we go to 18K motors for under 2.0 liter next year, and assuming my Escort was not damaged I'm already set for 2019 :D .

About the refunds - I appreciate the sentiments, but this is not a for-profit effort. I have over $700 today in my account for this and will return it so that folks can use if for their 2019 entries. I am NOT comfortable keeping any monies in the event someone decides not to participate next year.

Simply an integrity issue with me, so once the dust settles, I pay the current host for his shipping efforts, I'll split the monies up evenly by participant and send that back out.
