Sprite Proxy Race 2018 -JT’s Build

Postby JT Previa » Tue Oct 31, 2017 8:44 pm

I just received my Slot Car Corner order for the miscellaneous parts I needed to complete my Sprite, so it was time to start building - or at least planning!

I started at SCCs Proxy Part Page, which has links to some of the typical parts needed to finish the kit.

Since I can’t seem to find the adjustable PCS chassis I was planning on using, I figur d I’d use up some of that brass and piano wire I’ve been accumulating.

I grabbed an index card and traced the top and side views of the chassis, paying particular attention to the wheel wells. I established a center line and then worked out where the axle center lines were.

Image

Then, I turned my attention to motor mount options. It was clear a sidewinder was out...

Image

The first option was to check to see how a Slot It pod would work.
It didn’t: very close, but those wheels aren’t fitting under the wheelwells. No room for s chassis extension to the rear (I’ve gotten around that on some Cheetahs I built, but...

So, I rummaged around and found a heavy duty BWA motor bracket. More scrounging found some oilier bushings that fit the holes. It good to be a hoarder !

Image

Back end is shaping up, now to figure out how to deal with the Sprites notoriously tight front end....

In order to work out some of the front end details, I consulted with some “experts” I had on the shelf...

Aaah, the rat Bugeye #13 that was the inspiration for my scratch building and involvement in co-organizing proxies.

Good to see it and your later Bugeye entries in the 2013 and 2014 Sprite Proxy Races (SPR).

I've come a long way, but you were already doing wire and brass builds back then.

Looking forward to seeing your newest build.

Thanks, Dan. Having the kit parts certainly makes it easier to get started.

(My body has one side panel with a slight tumbledown inward. Is a cup of hot water the preferred way to soften the resin to reshape it?)

Back to that compact Sprite front end. I want to incorporate SCC axle blocks, because a level race car is a good handling car. I had used the axle blocks on my SPX Sprite, so flipped it over for comparison. While the widened SPX Sprite is close to the 1/29 Sprite’s width, the 1/29 front tire’s are much wider than the SPXs narrow ones. As a result, it will be tough to mount the axle blocks and still allow the nearly 180 degree guide rotation I prefer.

A few photos of body on wheels. Track will need to be a bit narrower to give some clearance between tire and body.

Figuring out tire dia based on motor mount depth, clearance, and then converting to metric to compare to rules min tire diameter.

Lots of wire bending and some hole drilling. Speaking of drilling, I need to pot some lateral hold downs on this jig like I added to my Retro Jig.

Image

Did a bit more tire work on the Econo-Hudy. (I pulled a Tom Sawyer on my friend Methe, who insisted on showing me how the pros glue and true tires - sorry you got black tire superglue all over your hands Bob, I’m sure it will wear off....eventually.)

Ah JT.....you are turning, tuning up the wick!. I knew if you could hide in the basement for a couple of days you would create something unique and well designed!

Whoa, a few bends on that outrigger wire.

Just JT being creative as usual.

Can hardly wait to see the box it comes in!

I’ve been in the basement so long, I’m just catching up to these responses . Thanks.

Yes, some impulsive wire bending, hopefully it’s functional!

The rare D-type Sprite.

I am falling in love with balsa wood.

Drillium to lighten up the brass mass and look cool.

I need to solder more often than once a year:

Image

Polished up a bit. Jail door rattle pan doesn’t rattle as much due to some motor interference. Who designed this chassis!?

Well done on the aero look.

I can envision a paint scheme with scallops if you've got time.

Looking forward to seeing it.
