Sprite Proxy Race 2018 - Quick summary

Postby VTECFOUR » Wed Jul 05, 2017 12:44 pm

WHY?
After co-running three consecutive proxies from 2013 to 2015, Sprite Proxy Race and U13 Challenge, with JTPrevia, it was time to take a break.

Sprite Proxy

U13 Challenge

Three years later, I just fulfilled a long-standing wish and purchased a 1:1 Bug/Frogeye.

How better to mark the occasion with the resurrection of the Sprite Proxy Race? Well, been there, done that, so let's give it a twist.

WHAT?
Essentially, this is a celebration of the charismatic Bug/Frogeye and an era of simpler road racing. JT's had thoughts of a "box of parts" proxy for awhile and I've gotten into resin casting and building chassis. So, why not combine an IROC style format with a creative open chassis build element. You must use four provided components:

- my lightweight cast body (11 - 12g) mastered from a modified old Monogram 1:32 Sprite kit which actually measures 1:29 in scale
- SCC's Classic Tuna 16K motor
- RS Slot Racing's RSW002 rims that accept .450" wheel inserts, identical to the no longer available BWA mid width ones.
- Paul Gage's 21073 and 21093 classic-looking tires.

Image

Chassis-wise, go to it. Be creative with brass, piano wire, plastic or a combination. My original prototype sits on an adjustable wheelbase PCS chassis.

Image

What I'm keen to see is after taking a number of variables (motor, wheels, tires, wheel base, track width) out of the equation, will a single or number of cars stand out in performance? I have no doubt there'll be some amazing and creative builds.

The $50 USD entry fee (add $5 for outside North America) includes sending your kit components to build from and the return of your entry at the conclusion.

We've got a maximum field of twenty because that's a comfortable number to run for the track host, drivers and marshallers without getting tired and bored and besides that's all the bodies I've cast!

Image

Previous Sprite Proxy participants have been contacted, so hurry and sign up.

WHEN?
The noted dates by and schedule are:

November 15, 2017 - register, pay and provide three preferred car numbers
Janurary 19, 2018 - postmark shipped to Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada)
February 9, 2018 - entry received in Vancouver, British Columbia (Canada)
mid- February to mid-March, 2018 - run races on at least four track venues
April, 2018 - run races in New England (US) on at least two tracks
May 2018 - return cars to owners

WHERE and WHO?
The tracks are previous ones from the 2013/2014 Sprite proxies and U13 Challenge in 2015 with some new venues. The west coast Canadian ones are the Greater Vancouver Slot Car Club (GVSCC) tracks run by an experienced and enthusiastic group. Same can be said for the Northeast Racing Fiends (NERF) in the New England region of United States.

That's it for now.

Looks good, happy I dont have to cast any bodies for this event.
I will be a willing spectator.
Good luck to all participants.
Regards munter
ps you are lucky that Dan's body is a bit bigger than the tiny airfix model used as a master last time round.

I would like to participate, please pm me the payment info.

When will I receive the parts? I would like to attempt a wire brass chassis and would need all the time I can get!

All,
To confirm your entry, please,
- PayPal $50 USD (add $5 if outside of North America) to vtecfour@gmail.com
- provide your mailing and email addresses through a PM or email
- list three preferred car numbers if you haven't done so far

Right now, we've got 17 participants with eight confirmed with payment. That leaves 3 spots assuming everyone so far comes through.

Assigned car numbers to date include,
3 (TuscoTodd)
6 (charlesx)
7 (F1Fan)
14 (glasshorsevh)
15 (mether05)
16 (Duke777)
21 (DRW21)
22 (RSslotracing)
29 (TCNZ)
73 (TF1250)
75 (black3sr)

@mether05 - Hi Bob, good to have you returning with an entry and hosting with your Cornerstone track. I'll confirm with Paul Gage this afternoon if the provided tires are his XPG's which you've mentioned work well on your surface.

@Radarek - Hi Dariuz. We're set for tracks but for a future small bore proxy that I've got in mind, your location could work well as a track hub. I seem to recall that's you've got a number of tracks in the Edmonton area. As for the Targa race run at GVSCC, I believe it's being pushed to the fall of 2018 as the scheduling conflicts with this proxy.

@brainslot - I'd love to see an all wheel drive version like you built for the previous Sprite Proxy races. The provided SCC Tuna Classic motors have long shafts at both ends but probably not long enough. No doubt whatever you build will be creative.

@TuscoTodd - Just waiting for tires to arrive today (personally delivered by Paul Gage) and the DANJIM kit cards from New England in a few days.

It's shaping up to be an interesting proxy.

Dan
