I'll start first with something I came across awhile back to use for body posts!! They are hollow lollipop sticks from Hobby Lobby that work perfect for our smaller screws!!

When soldering brass heat sinks seem to be invaluable.
Even something as small as a typical alligator clip will help
Place the clip on or very near the portion of the brass you want to
protect from the heat. ie a previous solder joint.

Inline with the "Lollipop sticks" post above, here is the tool I use to cut them with!!! Dog toenail clippers!! Make a quick snap with them to get a straight cut!! Or, put a snug hold on the stick and turn it slow and put pressure on cutters until you have reamed into it and continue turning and pressure until it cuts thru!!

Slate From an old Pool Table makes an Excellent Heat proof and Flat soldering surface. Also since Slate Naturally sinks heat, it makes it easy to solder near other joints, Also it's drillable and scribeable , so you can add lay out lines and Jig Points. I get my from the local pool table supply, if you ask nice they'll even Gie you broken or cut off Chunks, I bring the guys in the back a 6 pak and they'll even cut it on their diamond saw

This great tip came from Nerf awhile back and I wanted to share with you!! Hope he doesn't mind?? They can be bought at Pat Catan's, Michaels, Hobby Lobby or any place that sells crafts. They are "stick pins" that you use to attach stuff to your clothing. You can trim them however you want and the holes in them are perfect for .085 axles, such as Artins or R/D's.

Mounting SCX, Carrera and RS motors

Yep, what Ed said - I've threaded those holes with a 2mm tap also. I didn't take the armature out - was very careful not to introduce the tap into the motor cavity any more than necessary.

Fixin' a warped/twisted Vac-Form Body!

Postby LibertyFLHTC » Sun Sep 23, 2012 7:56 am

electra flying wrote: You can do it a couple of ways.

1) in the oven at low heat 100 degree's, weight it down flat let it warm up then cool in the fridge. But remember to long in the cooker it will start to melt.

2) Mount to the chassis, then take a hair dryer (pistol type) or a heat gun. On low setting heat the vac till it is pliable, then warp to where you want it. But again be careful not to over heat. I use a fanning motion and touch the vac every so often to see that it is not getting to hot.

Good Luck!!!

Another take on getting SCX front tires to touch the track s

Postby LibertyFLHTC » Sun Sep 23, 2012 8:01 am

by Broman62:

These are sweeeeeet arse rides and I have been wantin' to get these front tires to touch the track ever since I got them into my hands!! Finally got the chance Thur. evenin' amongst the frustrations on the semi truck builds!! First 2 pics show the final results and the difference between the heights of each car before and after!!
Image
Image

After removing the guide, I did the usual cutting out of the plastic circle that it rides in!! After doing a bunch of these in the past, I finally used this dremel bit to ream the guide hole just to make sure nothing rubs as it moves!! Also I left the 2 tits stick out this time(above the guide hole) to keep the guide from swiveling all the way around, which I had not done before!!
Image

Next, I took the guide and did the "Puddle Dude trim" on it to make it be able to ride all the way up into the guide hole!! Also, I cut the back of the guide blade to keep it from rubbing on the bottom of the chassis!!
Image

Then something that I do that helps it get that final depth is to bend the copper feed rails to a 45 deg angle to almost level with the bottom of the guide hole!! If you look at them OTB, they look to be at about a 22.5 deg. angle and this just doesn't work!! They need to be bent up more to get that extra depth!! The next 2 pics show this and I hope they are clear enough to see!! With this model chassis, the bend has to be almost right under the axle and you have to be very careful bending these!! Honestly, I have never broke one but it could happen!! You need to hold a small flat tip screwdriver down on the very back bend with one hand and then with the other hand, take a pair of good tweezers and kinda push back and up to get these strips at the right angle!! It takes patience and alot of fiddlin' to get them just right!! They may touch the axle when you do this and if it bothers you, put a piece of thin tape between it and the axle!! Just make sure when you do this bending that once you have it set, make sure the copper tabs make good contact with the guide contact point!s! This is where the fiddlin' part comes into play doing that!! Before you install the guide back into the guide hole, put a drop or 2 of oil on the stem so it glides up and down in the hole!! One last thing that I haven't done yet but will do is to feather the guide brushes out to make good contact with the track!!
Image
Image
Image

Its not hard to do and is thrillin' when your done and set that car down and all 4 wheels are touchin' the track!! Will be doin' the Yellow #89 as soon as the semi trucks are finished and shipped!!

Remember, this can be done with ALL SCX cars!!!!

Good Luck and Enjoy!!!!

Another clear glass idea

Postby LibertyFLHTC » Sun Sep 23, 2012 8:05 am

by Broman62:

Worked on this about a month ago and wanted to wait to see how the project would hold up after the car sat for awhile!!

Had been wondering how to get clear glass on some cars that don't have clear glass or ones we cut the plastic windows out and then say...now what!! Anyway, was walkin' thru Wally's world one day and came across something I have used in the past in my house and thought...this could work!! For around $5 I thought, if it don't work on my cars I can still use it in the home...win-win!!
Image
Image
Image
Image
I took a plastic dollar store plastic car and cut the front and rear windows out!! Then I took the roll of double-sided tape that comes in the kit and cut small narrow strips to fit around the inside of the window frames!! Then I cut small pieces of the plastic sheeting that come in the kit and carefully removed the covering on the up side of the double sided tape and carefully placed the plastic sheet over them and presed down and then used a pair of tweezers to get that final push down onto the tape!! Then I took a hair dryer to it and wha-la...clear glass!!!
Image
Image
Image

I did the front window first and if you notice on the left side that I didn't put the tape all the way around(make sure you over-lap the tape) and there is a gap that is clearly shown!! I did the rear window next and over-lapped the tap(alittle tricky over-lapping double sided tape) but it came out sweeeeeeet!! Look at all 4 corners of the rear window and no gaps!!

Now remember, if the plastic sheeting gets a little crinkled when you apply it to the tape, don't worry, the hair dryer shrinks it and sucks those crinkles out!! Also, it came to me that this may not hold up in some severe crashes but remember, you can peel it all back out if it does get ripped and replace it...sweeeeeet!! One thing I would do if and when I use it(Turkey Bash) is to put some clear fingernail polish around the edges on the inside just to help hold everything in place!! I checked on the car again this evening and everything is still in place and the plastic sheeting is actually still pretty taunt!!

Another thing, any pieces of tape that you cut and don't use, save for the next project because every samll piece will work!!

Just another idea that we can use for our slot car bodies!!!

Good Luck and Enjoy!!

Gluing Clear Glass

Postby LibertyFLHTC » Sun Sep 23, 2012 8:10 am

by MGS 75thMEU:

I found a use for all those 1/32 extra magnets I have laying around. I pad the outside of the body then put magnets on the inside and out to draw the glass tight to the roof then use a microbrush to put some Krazy Glue in the holes I ground in the glass.
