Kleskun Hills Qualifying

Postby BARC 1 » Sat Oct 15, 2016 9:31 am

Saturday morning brings us to the track for this years qualifying run for the 2016 Kleskun Hills Open. The cars were rolled out of the garages and on to the track to get ready. Qualifying is a 20 lap run where total time and fastest lap are noted. To qualify first you must compete the quickest 20 lap time, with the fastest lap used to break any ties. Deslots result in a yellow flag, with the car re-positioned on the track and the run restarted. Deslots will effect the time run as reaction time to the track call button and subsequent restart will add to the time.

The cars were entered into the computer and I believe the software randomly selects the qualifying order from the cars entered

This years order is

Barc Lexus
Taskak Nissan
Taskak Porsche GT3
PDRT Porsche 956
PDRT Mini
JHRICO Capri
JHRICO Porsche alm
DF Mazada
CJR Aston Vantage
BARC Porsche

Image

First out on to the track is the BARC Lexus. The BARC car ran a clean 20 laps, not an overly fast car, with a light front end that can lead to deslots with too much acceleration coming out of corners. The car was driven with this in mind.

It crossed the lane with a 20 lap time of 115.189 sec and a fastest lap of 5.524 sec.

Image

The Taskak Nissan was next. This SCX chassis with the ONYK shell is a stunning looking car A good running stable car lead to another problem free qualifying session. A little jumpy with the tail end sliding , but predictable and controllable

Crossed the line with a 20 lap time of 115.620 sec and a fastest lap of 5.482 sec

Image

No sooner had the Nissan returned to the garage and it was time for the Taskak Porsche GT3 car to begin its qualifying run. A stock Go car with Urethane tires, and added weight and a modified guide pin were used in an effort to get the most out of this stock chassis. Light with the torqy motor meant running it at lower voltage as well as dialing in the ohms on the controller to get the most out of the car. Had trouble on lap 9 and deslotted after exiting under the bridge which effected its over all time.

TaskAk Porsche ended up with a 20 lap combined time 125.609 with a fastest lap recorded at 5.948. This puts the car into the race as it is under the cut off time of 7 seconds.

Image

IT was now the PDR teams time to see what its cars could do, Taking the challenge first for the team was the Porsche 956, a Kyosho bodied car sitting on a PDRT 3D printed chassis and using Dnano power. This car is a pleasure to drive with smooth consistent performance with lots of driver feedback. A great COG, good tires and a strong motor lead to clean 20 lap run, crossing the line with a combined 20 lap time of 99.254 sec with a fast time 4.736 sec.

Image

As the 5th car on the track we are now halfway through qualifying as the PDRT mini takes the green light to start its run. The vacuum formed shell on a scratchbuilt chassis with an open frame motor is the only car in the field to have some inherent magnetic traction in it's design that was measured at 9 gms. This fact means that we have two different classes of cars on the track this year, as the magnetic force will help.

This car is very smooth and fast and with its added magnetic traction was an easy car to drive fast. A great car but to be fair to the other entries I decided to put this car in a class of its own. In future races the class structure will stand as the car has no added magnetic traction, but all cars that have some inherent magnetic force will race in the Inherent Magnetic Class(IMC) class. This year Peter's Mini is the only car to show up like this, but I know others build similar type cars so to be inclusive these cars will always be welcome at Kleskun Hills.

Not surprisingly the Mini had a clean 20 lap run with a combined 20 lap time of 97.880 sec with a fastest lap of 4.653 sec.

At the halfway point and to break up the post, a break will be taken in the reporting of the action. A video has also been done as well that will be posted later this morning. Not sure how you guys want the news. Video and then text to follow, or what I am doing now which is text with video to follow?

Cheers

Dan

2nd Qualifying session

We open the second half of qualifying with the JHRICO team. The Cast resin Capri on a Artin chassis with a 38K rpm motor resulted in lower track voltage and I had to dial in the controller to get the most out of this car. This car is smooth, one of the smoothest and quietest cars on the track. However the rocket like performance combined with a heavy body, high COG and no brakes means it is a handful to get around the track

The car ended up with a clean run, but I was on edge every second driving it to a combined 20 lap time if 126.069 sec and a fastest lap of 5.987 sec, Again this car met the qualifying cut off and will be in the race.

Image

The Porsche Spyder rolled out on to the track to make its qualifying run. This car with its plastic Chassis, HO style open box motor and guide flag was an interesting drive. In this case the open frame motor had zero magnetic traction, and all the adhesion came from rubber tires with a layer of urethane applied. A very steady car which gave good driver feedback meant it could be pushed to the limits of its ability. Although the tires hooked up and worked very well, the application of the urethane resulted in a bumby ride. The rear axle also had some play in the bearing area which compounded the ride issue.

Even with these issues the car had a clean run and crossed the line with a 20 lap time of 110.393 seconds and a fastest lap of 5.295 seconds.

Image

DF racing only had one entry into the race and it was a Kyosho Mazda with a Feutze 3D chassis ,urethane tires and Dnano power. A very smooth car, with a great COG and good power meant I could drive this car on the limit. It did suffer slightly from some back end hop on the corners. Not sure if this is a truing issue or just really good tire adhesion. This fact and an over zealous drive meant I lost it on the final corner of the 20 lap run. The resulting yellow and restart marred the run

The car had a 20 lap time of 106.093 with a fastest lap of 4.951 sec

Image

CJR was another lone car entry. A Carrera Aston Vantage Go car with some added weight ,urethane tires and a modifed guide pin. A nice sharp looking entry that is about as stock as you can run without magnets. This car was my toughest to drive. With the GO motor again the voltage needed to be turned down and the controller dialed in to make it controllable. This car keep catching me on the hairpin. It do not like the downhill slope and corner radius and caught me 3 times with deslots at the same point in the track. It handled well everywhere else and fooled me into thinking I had it in control, but bite me on that corner.

It finished the 20 lap run in 127.003 sec. with a fastest lap of 5.823 sec. So not a great time but again another car that shows a stock Carerra Go car can beat the cut off time. With a better drive, more can be expected out of this car during the race.

Image

Finally the second BARC entry was up. The stock Carrera Porsche GT3, with urethene tires, guide flag, and 12 volt motor was easy to drive. It runs smooth has great brakes and had a clean 20 lap run
clocking a time of 114.785 and a fastest lap of 5.572 seconds

Image

So with the final run of the day qualifying is now history. Here is the official time sheet

Image

Because of the magnet issue, like LeMans different classes of cars compete at the same time on the same track with distinctions made by the class.

The Pole sitter in the IMC class is Peter's Mini

Image

The Pole Sitter in the Nomag class is captured again by Peter with his Porsche 962

Image

Video will be posted here as soon as it is uploaded.

Now it is time to prepare for the race. For you guys across the pond I will try and get something done tonight so it is Sunday morning for you. It is a fair amount of work to get all the results presented though, so no promises.

Cheers

Dan

Nicely done Dan. What a great presentation. That chatter on the corners is probably due to the loose rear wheel bushing's  I haven't quite made up my mind on how I want to correct this problem.

Thanks Peter. I was considering the use of brass tubing, after all it work on scratch built brass and wire chassis. Also those bearings are around $20.00 CDN with the freight tab. :(
