Ford vs Porsche Proxy Round 10 - PMCC

Round 10 of the 2017/8 Ford vs Porsche Proxy is planned for June 30 at the Pebblestone Model Car Circuit (PMCC) in sunny SoCal.

The cars arrived safely from New Zealand on Saturday, and although I have not yet unpacked them all, they appear to be undamaged by the long trip.

PMCC is a three-lane routed track that stands on the patio behind my garage. It has been used for a great number of Proxy races in it nearly 10-year life so far.

Power is from a Pyramid PS26KX that is normally set to 12Volts, racers can use either their own controllers or the provided Professor Motor diode controllers. We will run two-minute heats and rotate each car through the lanes twice, to get 12 minutes of racing per car. The two rotations through the lanes will be done with two groups of drivers, so each car will get 6 drivers.

Unlike previous events, there will not be any live streaming this time, but I will try to have some almost real-time updates as we proceed.

I managed to do qualifying today for the event on Saturday. Results will go up in the morning once Ihave massaged the Trackmate Excel file and added a few tenths to Smokeio's time...

Good news for Porsche fans, though. As some of you expected, the #23g from Kidvoltage topped the charts, with the #63 long-tail 917 in second. The #21 rounds out the qualifying podium.

The top 11 cars all ran under 6 seconds, which on my track is a quick time.

Right, here are the full results from yesterday's qualifying runs. I ran each car for a few laps to get my controller set up, then ran a 1-minute heat. When I de-slotted, I stopped the timer to re-slot the car and then continued.

This Proxy has a fairly large spread of times from top to bottom, a bit more than I have been seeing in previous series visiting PMCC.

A few general comments so far:

1. There is a wide variety of chassis designs, from full-blown scratchbuilt cars of brass and wire to home-made lexan sheets, to "Strapping tape Specials" to almost stock non-podded frames.
2. Quite a few cars suffer from having guides that are way too shallow in the slot, and often the same cars have a lot of play on the guide mounting. This does not bode well for racing.
3. Some cars are losing their brakes. Perhaps they did not have too much to start with, but this will also be detrimental to good lap totals.
4. A lot of cars suffer from some form of chatter. In some cases this is a matter of play in bushings, in some cases the taping of the chassis is either insufficient or in the wrong place.
5. Some tires are showing signs of the long series, bodies have been rubbing and re-profiling the sidewalls. Some tires now have sharp edges, perhaps due to wear, perhaps they were not rounded off to start with. Either way, this causes chatter and unpredictable slide on my track.
6. On my track, rubber tires have an advantage over urethanes, although some well-prepared urethanes can be competitive. Air system wheels also help here.

No cars suffered any damage in the trip from NZ, and all cars ran fine during their qualifying, apart from one where the motor popped out and had to be re-glued into its pod.

Racing will be Saturday June 30, starting around 1:30pm PDT. There will not be any streaming, but I will try to update the results in as close to real time as I can.

Race day is here, bright and sunny and not too hot, with a nice breeze blowing through the patio where the track stands.

Preparations are complete, now we wait for the drivers to arrive, a bit of practice with other cars, then serious racing for the afternoon.
