I built this car a couple of years back

I will do this a parts this time after losing the nice highly detailed post earlier today

specs

winneco 74 Thunderbird 460-4
nsr 17k motor
nsr gearing
slot-it wheels and F22 tires

this is what I decided to use to build the chassis

first I trimmed a motor holder and side rail section from a old cracked chassis
I glued then together in a S/W set up
I placed the motor and axle/gears in so I would get it all in the right spot
i also used a bit of paper to pack in between the motor ans axle to set the gear mesh

while waiting for the glue to dry I cut the rear half of the chassis out of the slot it display case base
I also cut the front half of of another old broken chassis
once the join edges matched correctly and the front and rear axles were parallel and at the right wheel base
I used the sticky tape hinge method for gluing them together
and gluing the motor holder in place

then I braced it using steel rod and JB weld and trimmed the front excess chassis off

then fitted the motor and rear axle set up
then JB welded the front axle bushes in place
I use the plastic bread tag method for this
the tag is .8mm thick just the right thickness to allow for the braids
I place the tag under the guide and then sit the front axle/wheels in place and glue them

now I have a rolling chassis

part 2

I then needed to make a section for mounting the rear of the body

so I made this out of some more of the slot it case base and the screw hole bits form one
of the broken chassis

then fitted it to the rear of the chassis

I used plastic golf tees for the body posts
the are light weight and strong
I screwed the tees to the chassis and the trimmed them to length
I sat the body in place to test how it was sitting and trimmed more as needed untill it sat how I wanted it
then put glue on top of the posts and sat the body in place and let the glue dry
then I removed the body and added more glue around the post for strength

part 3

I made the interior out of clear blister packaging and scaly bits

I used the dash from the thunderdird kit
once it was paint and fitted out I made up the roll cage out of plastic wire

then I finished off painting the body
I use floor polish as a clear coat
the decals are from Patto's place

fitted the interior and mounted the body
there you have it

I will fit the wheel inserts one day

hope this build helps others to think out of the box
I have seen al sorts of things used for chassis building
form gift cards, lego, styrene etc
just look around you for materials and keep those broken bits as they can come in handy

oh and if you are wondering how this car runs
well I will put it this way
the guy's at club don't like it when it comes out as it is unbeatable
it is very fast and stable
it corners like a bat out of hell
hence the reason I am build my 68 ponty for this class
as much fun it is to drive the thunderbird it is not that much fun to win races by 10 or so laps
I much prefer close tight racing that is where the real fun is

Fantastic build! all the element's of a pure scratch build! The car looks great and could be done by most anyone with a little scrounging.

I've looked at this thing about 100 times since you posted this. This is excellent scratch building of a really great car. Super, super work all around!
